The youngest member of the Manson family and an active participant in the LaBianca murders, Leslie Van Houten, was granted parole last year. California governor Jerry Brown overruled the parole recommendation.
Van Houten has just been granted parole again by a California Parole Board. She's been a model prisoner and earned several college degrees during her nearly 50 years behind bars. Van Houten had been a high school homecoming princess, athlete and cheerleader before dropping out of school and eventually ending up with Manson and crew. She testified that the trauma of her parents' divorce, her teen pregnancy and other problems led her to drop out of school, run away from home, become involved in drugs and eventually join Manson's cult. At her parole hearing, another young female member of the Manson family testified that Manson threatened to torture and kill her if she tried to leave. She told the Board that both she and Van Houten were afraid to leave the cult. Governor Brown now has a 120-day period to affirm, reverse or take no action on the latest decision. She's had plenty of time to come up with some reason why she liked playing with blood and listen to the victims screams asking why she was doing what she did.

I wonder how someone functions in the real world after being confined for 50 years.

When Manson didn't pick her for the mission, Van Houten volunteered to go and help kill the La Biancas.
Hopefully Moonbeam will volunteer to overrule the board again.

Trump is gonna put her in his cabinet as the head of the department to prevent hate crime.
Thank god I am oblivious to the opinions of others while caught in the blinding splendor of my own cleverness.

She felt the same when Susan Atkins died. A truly devout Christian. She's also convinced that the Manson followers who participated in the killings are all psychopaths who should never be free in society. For decades now, she's appeared at their parole hearings and pushed to keep them locked up, no matter what. She plans to keep doing so for society and the memories of all the victims. (EDIT: Added photos of Leno and Rosemary LaBianca, bottom row) No word yet as to whether California Governor Jerry "Moonbeam" Brown will again overturn the parole board's recommendation to release Leslie Van Houten. I think he's got about a month left to make the call.

Well, he sure waited until nearly the deadline to announce his decision.
Today, Governor Brown of California once again denied parole for the youngest follower of murderous cult leader Charles Manson. Brown acknowledged ^ Leslie Van Houten's youth at the time of the crime and her more than four decades as a model prisoner. 'However, these factors are outweighed by negative factors that demonstrate she remains unsuitable for parole,' Brown wrote. Van Houten, 68, is serving life for the murders of the LaBianacas when she was 19. Van Houten told the parole board in September that she accepted responsibility, stating that 'Manson was able to do what he did to all of us. I allowed it. I accept responsibility that I allowed him to conduct my life in that way.' But Governor Brown said in his decision that Van Houten still lays too much of the blame on Manson, who died two months ago at 83. Van Houten's attorney, Rich Pfeiffer, said Brown's decision shows an unprecedented and unlawful reliance to deny parole based on the circumstances of the crime, rather than the inmate's fitness. 'We're going to challenge this in court,' Pfeiffer said. 'I expect the courts to uphold the law and allow her to be released.' Pfeiffer added that he has 'dozens of clients who have done much worse deeds than Leslie has done and they're out leading productive lives.' Democratic Governor Brown, like Republican Governor Schwarzenegger before him, has steadfastly refused to let anyone associated with Manson's killings go free. Moonbeam's signed off on some legislation which I support, like Right to Die and legalization of Recreational Marijuana. Unfortunately, AG Sessions is doing what I was afraid he'd do -- he's going back on his word that he won't have the Fed interfere with state marijuana legalization. It's so long past time for the government to just take cannabis out of the Schedule 1 drug classification already. |
