I don't think it's ever acceptable but you're right about people changing. If the governor had apologized and said that, I don't think it would have gotten this ugly. But then the dummy said "nope, wasn't me" after saying it was the day before, then saying he might be getting it confused with the time he dressed up as Michael Jackson and then almost did the moonwalk for the press. The guy's a dolt.
