I haven't been able to get back to this thread for a couple days and wanted to respond to some key points.
I am more interested in discussing and finding solutions-and maybe discussing possible reasons why this keeps happening.
The other types of discussions are not productive.

The only way to stop these things is to have guards at doors. It cannot be legislated out of. Chasing mental retards and trying to blame guns that 95% of the population (besides criminals) own and taking their rights to be able to protect themselves is just a way to dissolve the 2^nd amendment little by little. SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) — Police in Springfield, Missouri, said they arrested a man who showed up Thursday at a Walmart store carrying a rifle and wearing body armor, terrifying shoppers who fled from the store.
Springfield police posted on Facebook that "an armed individual" was arrested. No shots were fired.
The Springfield News-Leader quoted Lt. Mike Lucas as saying that the man arrived Thursday afternoon wearing body armor and military-style clothing. He walked inside the Walmart carrying a "tactical rifle" and another gun. Lucas said the man had more than 100 rounds of ammunition.
Lucas said an off-duty firefighter held the suspect — a 20-year-old man who was not immediately identified — at gunpoint until police arrived about three minutes after receiving an initial call.
"Thankfully, there weren't any shots fired. I think it's great that that off-duty fire man was here," Lucas said.
Lucas said the suspect would be charged but the exact crimes would be determined later. Security video from inside the store would be reviewed to determine the man's demeanor and a possible motive, he said.
"His intent obviously was to cause chaos here, and he did that," Lucas added.
Springfield is about 165 miles (266 kilometers) south of Kansas City, Missouri.
The incident happened five days after a mass shooting at an El Paso, Texas, Walmart, left 22 people dead.

This story had a good ending due to "per chance"!

It was just "per chance" the Fireman (luckily packing) happened to be there "at the right time" and "the right place"! Therefore, happy ending.

To hopefully try to have a similar outcome when some other wacko happens to (and surely it will happen again) show up at a Walmart, or any place or store where many people gather, would require a "armed guard(s)" to be stationed at the entrance of said establishments.

If it became common practice for armed guards to be at establishments might make the wackos think twice about Knowing the fact that armed guards would be there. Something needs to be done to protect the innocent! The life they save may be "mine, or yours"!

What do you mean by protect yourself? A shotgun or a rifle, or assault weapons? Nobody needs assault weapons that are capable of killing dozens of people in less than a minute to protect themselves. What is your dispute about just making them more difficult to get?

What do you mean by protect yourself? A shotgun or a rifle, or assault weapons? Nobody needs assault weapons that are capable of killing dozens of people in less than a minute to protect themselves. What is your dispute about just making them more difficult to get?

Fair enough but what if more than one person comes at you when you are being house invaded? Would you prefer having the chance at shooting one targeted bullet at one home invader as you have seconds to aim and shoot OR would you like to spray buckshot through them all?

I don't really have a reason for posting today other than the fact that I live in Dayton just minutes from the Oregon District where the mass shooting happened less than 2 weeks ago. It's been a bit of a blur. I am finding myself totally obsessed with the details of this case. I don't know if it's because I frequent the area and work 2 blocks from where the shooting occurred or what. I have friends who know the shooter, know his parents, it just hit so close to home. Has anyone else in here ever been through something like this? I'm finding myself spacing out, unable to concentrate, totally obsessed with any information that comes out about the case, digging deep into the depths of the internet late into the night looking for I don't even know what. It's been such a weird couple of weeks. Our town & community is so strong but there is just this thick heaviness in the air every single day. I can't believe this is the world we live in.

Hi tlynne, don't know you at all but I know what it feels like to be bewildered. Many years ago My friend was shot right
in front of my eyes! He wasn't killed, but it looked like it at the time. It was very difficult to get over that trauma!
He is now semi-crippled, but he's alive.

Anyway, I was unable to sleep through the night for quite some time after that ordeal. It's only human.
I don't tell this story very often, and I really don't know why I am now, maybe it's because I was where you are now.
It will take some time, but it will get easier.

I mostly lurk around here, I would be surprised if anyone knew me lol. I used to be on much more frequently - I actually lived in Toledo when the Straub/Clarke murders happened and that's how I landed here but it's been a while since a case has hit so close to home I guess.

Anyway, I am so sorry you went through that. I can't even imagine what that must have put you through mentally/emotionally. I wasn't actually downtown when this happened, thank god, but we live so close there were sirens going off all night, disturbing video/photos surfacing online throughout the night which are gone now, so many of my friends/coworkers were down there, it feels like I was there in a sense, or should have been there. I don't really know. There's this really weird guilt thing that's been hanging over me ever since it happened. My mind is constantly elsewhere. Thanks for sharing your story. Strangely enough, the day or two after the shooting, a girl came to spend the day with me (we were loosely connected through work but had never actually met) who happened to be a Las Vegas Route 91 shooting survivor. It was strangely comforting being around/hugging/talking to someone who had been through a similar experience - albeit hers was much different, she was actually at the concert. I just can't even imagine. I really don't even know why I'm saying this. I guess talking anonymously to strangers on the internet is kind of therapeutic or something. I really appreciate you sharing your story. Thank you.

When something bad happens you can't change what occurred. The only thing you can do is damage control, if you have people who depend on you it's important to get past negative feelings as soon as possible. The way you look at things is extremely important. Be positive, be grateful your family is safe.

Thank you for your condolences. I don't think anyone really knows how to respond to something like this. There's been so many hugs these last couple weeks. So many tears. I have held onto complete strangers on the sidewalk sobbing into their shoulder. It's all very surreal. I'm not one to strike up a conversation with a stranger let alone touch them. Yesterday I was stopped at a red light and someone must have been doing some roof work or something near me, I heard this "pop pop pop" (most likely one of those air nail guns) and literally ducked down in my car. So weird how our body subconsciously responds to trauma.
