special guy. gets helicopter to Boston each day for court.
A federal judge declared James “Whitey” Bulger indigent today and assigned Boston defense lawyer J.W. Carney as his attorney leaving taxpayers to pick up the mobster’s legal bills.
Federal Judge Marianne Bowler said that after Bulger’s case is over, the court withholds the right to see if he can reimburse any of the cost.
A shackled Bulger was flown to Boston at noon today in a Coast Guard helicopter where he was walked across the tarmac at Logan Airport to a waiting SUV in a new twist to the high-powered security surrounding the mobster.
Bulger, who was dressed in a bright-orange jumpsuit, was taken back the same route with armed guards at his side for the entire time. Herald photographers caught up to the Bulger transport detail at Plymouth Airport.
Bulger’s world is now an 8-by-12-foot cell in Unit G, the maximum security section of the Plymouth County Correctional Facility, where inmates are locked up for 23 hours a day.
poor whitey is sending sad letters back to CA. this made me laugh today--->
they keep him at the Plymouth jail.
he's PC in the hole at Plymouth.
James “Whitey” Bulger’s world is now an 8-by-12-foot cell in Unit G, the maximum security section of the Plymouth County Correctional Facility, where inmates are locked up for 23 hours a day.
Built in 1994, the 1,600-inmate hoosegow on Long Pond Road — the largest prison facility under one roof in Massachusetts — houses a mix of county, state and federal prisoners, including accused terrorists and tax cheats.
A crying Catherine Greig pleaded guilty today to harboring her Southie mobster lover for 16 years while the two hid from the feds in sunny Southern California and elsewhere.
The 60-year-old gal pal of accused serial killer James “Whitey” Bulger admitted today prosecutors have sufficient facts to send her to jail on charges of conspiracy to harbor a fugitive, identity fraud and conspiracy to commit identity fraud.
Bulger, who was captured with Greig last year in Santa Monica, Calif., has pleaded not guilty to charges of participating in 19 murders. He is set to go to trial in November.
Greig faces up to five years in prison and is scheduled to be sentenced June 12. But prosecutors have already said she could serve less than three years in prison because she has no prior record.
Although she is not testifying against Bulger at this point, U.S. District Court Judge Douglas P. Woodlock warned Greig she could be compelled to come forward at Bulger’s trial if asked and she could still lose her Quincy home if prosecutors show she bought the house with "ill-gotten gains."
When the facts of her life on the run with Bulger were read into the court record today, Greig responded: "That’s what happened."
She also broke out into tears when recounting a suicide of a family member years ago. Her tears followed after being asked if she had ever sought counseling in the past.
In a statement of facts filed in court Monday, Greig acknowledged that she agreed to join Bulger on the run beginning in early 1995.
She also acknowledged that she agreed to conceal him from authorities for 16 years, used aliases and unlawfully obtained identification documents and repeatedly helped him obtain prescription medication from a pharmacy by claiming to be his wife.
"I engaged in conduct that was intended to help Bulger avoid detection from law enforcement and to provide him with support and assistance during his flight from law enforcement," the document states.
Bulger, now 82, headed the notorious Winter Hill Gang and also was a longtime FBI informant who gave the agency information on the rival New England Mafia. Bulger’s former FBI handler, John Connolly Jr., was convicted of warning him that he was about to be indicted, prompting him to flee Boston in late 1994.
hell, i have to be gone a few hours and miss this sentencing.

A federal judge has ruled that relatives of victims of mobster James “Whitey” Bulger will be allowed to give statements this morning at the sentencing of his longtime moll, Catherine Greig. Four will do so.
U.S. District Court Judge Douglas P. Woodlock made the ruling before a packed courtroom in Boston awaiting the fate of the Quincy woman who was at Bulger’s side for 16 years on the lam.
Greig pleaded guilty in March to charges of harboring a fugitive, conspiracy and identity fraud. Bulger, 82, is slated to go on trial in November for the slaughters of 19 women and men.
Greig’s lawyers had asked yesterday that the relatives of the victims be barred from giving victim impact statements in court. FUCK YOU!
The prosecution has urged Woodlock to sentence Greig to 10 years. Her defense team, claiming her only crime was being in love with Bulger, has asked for a 27-month sentence. Under federal guidelines, she could face up to 15 years.

Families of the alleged victims of mobster James Whitey Bulger could know the fate of his longtime moll Catherine Greig within the hour but they won’t be hearing from Greig herself.
The former Quincy dental hygienist, 61, this afternoon declined to address the families at her sentencing hearing in U.S. District Court, which has been ongoing since 9:30 a.m.
Steven Davis, whose sister Debra Davis, Bulger is accused of throttling to death in 1981 — one of 19 murders he’ll be tried for in November — complained to Judge Douglas P. Woodlock that Greig didn’t even have the heart to look them in the eye.
“Catherine, you’re a dirty whore,” Davis said.
Greig winced, and at one point began to weep, as Davis and other family members lashed out at her in court.
Prosecutors asked that Greig serve no less than 10 years for helping Bulger, 82, evade capture for 16 years. Greig’s defense team has asked for her to serve 2 years and three months, however, Woodlock today tacked on enhanced penalties for her lying about her financial assets and knowledge of dozens of weapons the couple had secreted in walls of their Santa Monica hideout. Under those penalties, Woodlock is unlikely to sentence her to anything less than seven years.
Greig pleaded guilty in March to charges of harboring a fugitive, conspiracy and identity fraud. Bulger, 82, is slated to go on trial in November for the slaughters of 19 women and men.
Catherine Greig, the Quincy woman who was at mobster James “Whitey” Bulger’s side for 16 years on the lam, has been sentenced to eight years in federal prison.
U.S. District Court Judge Douglas P. Woodlock announced the 61-year-old’s fate today before a packed courtroom in Boston. Woodlock also fined Greig $150,000 and ordered that the fine be paid within 60 days.
Greig showed no reaction as Woodlock announced the sentence.
edit to add:
Less than 24 hours after Whitey Bulger’s mobster moll was sentenced to eight years in jail after pleading guilty to harboring the accused murderer, her lawyer has filed an appeal of her conviction.
“Now comes the defendant, Catherine Greig, in the above numbered indictment and does hereby claim an appeal of the above captioned conviction to the United States District Court of Appeals,” reads the one-sentence filing by attorney Kevin Reddington.
Judge Douglas P. Woodlock yesterday sentenced the 61-year-old Quincy woman after she pleaded guilty to harboring a federal fugitive, conspiracy and identity fraud. Greig was on the lam for 16 years with Bulger, 82, who is slated to go on trial in November for the murders of 19 men and women.
After the sentencing, Reddington yesterday told reporters he believed there was no point in filing an appeal because Woodlock’s reasoning was “as close to bulletproof as you can get.”
Hundreds of documents and photos released Friday offer a detailed look inside the California apartment where Bulger and his longtime girlfriend, Catherine Greig, hid during their 16 years on the run. Descriptions and photos of the apartment, as well as interviews with people who knew the couple, were among hundreds of documents unsealed by prosecutors Friday.
BOSTON – The attorney for James "Whitey" Bulger said Monday that the former Boston mob boss and one-time FBI informant shouldn't be prosecuted in 19 murders because the government promised him immunity for past or future crimes.
Attorney J.W. Carney said he'd soon file a motion to dismiss the charges because "a representative of the federal government" gave Bulger the blanket immunity during the 1970s.
Carney wouldn't say who allegedly gave Bulger immunity or explain how it was possible to grant immunity for future crimes, saying it would all be in his motion.
The sensational allegation came on a busy day for Bulger's defense, which was granted a four-month delay in Bulger's trial Monday. And earlier in the day, Carney filed a motion to have the trial judge in the case recused, saying he expected to call him as a witness during his motion to dismiss.
Carney said U.S. District Judge Richard Stearns was a top prosecutor in the U.S. Attorney's office when Bulger was allegedly committing crimes with impunity during the 1980s. But Carney noted the office never charged Bulger, and he argued Stearns would now do whatever he could to shield former colleagues who knew of the alleged immunity deal.
"Since Judge Stearns was part of the governmental prosecuting agency which did nothing to stop the defendant from committing the criminal acts when they occurred, no reasonable person would believe he can now be impartial," Carney wrote in a motion for recusal.
Christina DiIorio-Sterling, spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney's office, said the office didn't have any comment on Carney's motion or allegations. "The government will respond as appropriate through the court," she said.
Steve Davis, whose sister Debra was allegedly strangled by Bulger in 1981, was stunned by Carney's allegations of an immunity deal.
"A license to kill, according to Mr. Carney. It gets you boiling. ... I don't even know how to put the thoughts together," he said. "There had to be some agreement for all the crime he was committing, but I don't think he had (a) license to kill or murder."
Bulger, who allegedly ran the notorious Winter Hill gang, was a top-echelon FBI informant who fled Boston in 1995 after being tipped by John Connolly Jr., his longtime FBI handler, who recently completed a 10-year prison sentence on racketeering charges. Bulger was captured in Santa Monica, Calif., in June after 16 years on the run
Carney had argued the case is so complex, he needed until November 2013 to prepare his defense, including reviewing 320,000 pages of evidence turned over by prosecutors. The evidence was such a mess when it was given to him it was like a "shuffled deck of cards," Carney argued.
But prosecutors say Carney hasn't accepted their help and preferred to "wallow in confusion and to complain." They also said Carney's problems were his client's own fault, because he remained a fugitive for so long.
On Monday, U.S. Magistrate Judge Marianne Bowler granted Carney's motion to delay the start of Bulger's trial from this November until March 4, 2013, calling it a compromise.
"Clearly, the (evidence) remains a problem in this case, because of its volume," she told Carney. "Clearly, you have a right to review it."
Prosecutors said they'd call 30 to 50 witnesses at Bulger's trial, which they estimated could last up to three months.
Tom Donahue, whose father was allegedly killed by Bulger when Bulger was targeting another man, said his biggest concern about the delay granted Monday is that Bulger won't live long enough to face justice.
"He's an old man. I'm worried about him surviving. Time is not on our side," he said. "But it's only four months."
I agree with LC and the prosecutor, Bulger's pursuit of immunity in the killings of 19 people, based on the alleged word of a dead investigator, is absurd and laughable.
Trial starts in June. Bulger's going down hard, imo. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.
Update from today: BOSTON - Reputed Boston gangster James "Whitey" Bulger appeared in federal court in Boston at a pretrial hearing regarding his attempts to claim immunity.
Judge Denise Casper did not immediately rule Friday on a request by Bulger's lawyers to reverse an earlier ruling barring their client from claiming immunity as a defense at his June trial.
This man's trial is going on right now & one of the witness's has been found dead in the woods. Woooo.
A body found in Lincoln, Massachusetts, is believed by law enforcement sources to be that of Stephen Rakes, a key witness in the on-going trial of James 'Whitey' Bulger.
The stunning development comes before Rakes was supposed to testify that Bulger, 83, threatened his daughter at gunpoint in an effort to force him to turn over his South Boston liquor store as a headquarters for the notorious mobster.
Police are believed to have told Rakes' realtives that the death appeared to be a suicide. However, a source close to the family said that 'he had no phone, no wallet and police are still looking for his car.'
After 5 days of deliberations, the jury found Bulger guilty of racketeering today; including 11 of the 19 murders with which he was charged. He is scheduled to be sentenced on Nov. 13th.
Bulger didn't testify, but he did make a statement that he was not getting a fair trial; setting grounds for appeal.
This guy ran amok screwing over and killing people in Boston for more than a decade before he evaded authorities and set up a new life in Santa Monica, CA. Many of his victims were people that were handed to him by corrupt FBI agents who valued Bulger as an informant.
Messd up shit, all the way around. He'll probably get life, IMO. But, even if he gets something less, it won't be much less.
Whitey Bulger just got whacked in jail. He was or was just about to be transferred from a florida jail to a medical jail because of his heart condition (like he had a heart) h e was on the way out at any rate.
