Stanley Clarke and John McLaughlin are two of my all-time favorites.

Years ago maybe 40 a guy that I knew from camping invited me to his garage. I went in and above it he had a really cool setup. Guitars all along the wall a pool table in the middle and a stage with amps and all kinds of things. I played a few songs and he told me after watching me I should play base. It took me over 20 years until I saw what he meant. 

So I gained an appreciation for the base before I even knew it.
