Norma Thorton is a 78 year old grandmother in Arizona. She was arrested for feeding the homeless. She was told if she went back to the park and fed them again she'd be thrown in jail. Goddamn this makes me mad. Arrested for being a decent individual. Are you fucking kidding me.

Same thing happened in Florida a few years ago, a 90 year old priest was arrested along with 2 other people for feeding the homeless.
It's against the law in my town, but we do it anyway.

Is this an "only in America" type thing? It is fucking bizarre. How is it possible that people can be arrested & thrown in jail for helping those who are less fortunate. My god.

That's fucked up. I give money and food to the homeless all the time. Have yet to be arrested.

I think it is an only in America type thing. The first time I got a ticket for feeding the homeless, I was told that it was a health code violation and that there were 'soup kitchens ' I could volunteer for if I wanted to feed them. The soup kitchen in our town is open for all of 2 days a week, for 2 hours a day. So unless the homeless people want to walk to the city, they get to starve for the other 5 days. We don't even have a shelter here, the closest one is 45 minutes away by car.
2 years ago, we had a cold snap in January, it was below 0 for a week. It took the town 4 days into that cold snap, and a lot of citizens bitching, before they opened an old building and let it be used as an emergency shelter. Then they kicked everyone out and closed it down as soon as the temperature was above 0

WTF kind of world is it when the most decent among us are penalized for their decency?

I can see why cities would have ordinances for feeding large groups of homeless people on public land such as parks. So why don't more churches offer to do it instead? There is a church here on every fucking corner and there is only one here that does it once a week. The church down the street from me tore their old building down and built a modern, million dollar building in its place, seems like they could afford to contribute to feeding the homeless too.

No need to cry about it, Norma just needs to start asking churches if they're willing to help her serve the homeless there. The Jehovahs are slapping up Kingdom halls all over the place, no need for this woman to be feeding transients in parks and back alleys.

Once you feed a cat it comes back for more. Communities don't want homeless people for obvious reasons. The question is, why do wealthy societies have homeless people? The obvious answere is, corruption. I keep trying to tell you our society is a broken mess, this is one of many red flags that confirm what I've said. Bear in mind that corruption manifests in a great many ways, and left unchecked it will kill a society.

You don't have to convince me that our society is a broken mess. I know it is.
I feel sorry for some people. It's usually the most vulnerable, those who can't ever get a break. I don't believe that everyone who is down on their luck are there because they want to be or that they aren't trying hard enough not to be. There are those who are deserving of a helping hand.
..and there are those who have made bad life choices. Hell, I've made bad life choices, but I've been lucky enough that I have people who care about me and have helped me. Not everyone is that blessed.

If we somehow managed to get corruption under control these sorts of problems would be remedied. I don't advocate equality with respect to the distribution of wealth but extreme disparity is criminal. There has to be balance with respect to society and individual or society no longer serves a constructive purpose and invariably ends up failing.

Yeah, we know there is corruption. You keep saying it to us as if we don't agree or don't know.....BUT you do bring it up w/ every topic. So your solution is-solve the corruption solve the homeless, hungry, etc etc

Good idea. As long as they don't make them recite a bible verse to get a bowl of soup!

Corruption is the only reason problems go unsolved. Mostly it boils down to spiritual corruption, e.g., selfishness or greed, which leads to those who are sworn to serve society serving their own interests instead, which has disastrous consequences. In such societies the masses beome psychologically corrupted and degredation becomes normalized, and people no longer act in their own best interests because their wants take precedence over their needs.
If you disagree see if you can come up with a serious problem that doesn't relate to corruption.

A good many of the homeless don't want to go to a different location to get fed because they give up the place where they sleep, so relying on churches is inadequate.

Thats just it. I didn't say I disagreed.
Its not that I ever disagree with your corruption discussion-I just feel that there is no way to actually solve that problem and I don't think it will ever go away-so I look for solutions to problems that i can solve now.

It was a question, not a statement.
Corruption is a solvable problem, but not by isolated individuals. People working together can achieve miraculous things that would otherwise not be possible.

I did a Google search for churches near me, within a 20 mile radius, there are 18 Baptist churches, 14 Methodist churches, and 5 catholic churches. I swear, I thought I lived in the boonies. We have no downtown, half the roads are dirt, but hot damn, we have fucking 37 buildings that idolize a fictitious character!
