The Inauguration

Ordinary Peephole Wrote:Who was the first on-screen black president?

I know Morgan Freeman (who else!) played the president in the film Deep Impact.
That's the earliest I can find thus far...

After searching around, I also found a few sites talking about how the guy who played 'David Palmer' in 24 Hours supposedly modeled his character after Obama. Wouldn't that have had to be before he even talked about running for President though?

the best source you could find was "Nigeria's Most Widely Read Newspaper"???? Was the AP unavailable???
I'm surprised she found THAT... I don't know why, but when I searched earlier today, I couldn't find anything confirming that the action had already been taken. Maybe there is more out there now though... I dunno.

There are Many examples, most notably:
President Lindberg (Tommy 'Tiny' Lister) in The Fifth Element
Chris Rock in Head of State
Terry Crews plays President Camacho in Idiocracy
Morgan Freeman in Deep Impact

BUT the oldest is The Man from 1972. When the President and Speaker of the House are killed in a building collapse, and the Vice-President declines the office due to age and ill-health, Senate President pro tempore Douglas Dilman (James Earl Jones) suddenly becomes the first black man to occupy the Oval Office.

ACTUALLY I just checked and the oldest is Sammy Davis Jr. was only 9 when he assumed the top office in the 1933 satire "Rufus Jones for President."

I saw the others listed, but not 'The Man'. Nice job ::bravo::

I do think, however, that 'Palmer' in 24 Hours was the most influential role as 'black President'. The character he played was intelligent, capable and (I thought) 'trustworthy'. It was very easy to 'believe' the role he played and with 24 Hours being such a popular, long running series, I can't help but think it may have played a part in the election (despite the fact he was killed off in what, the 3rd season maybe?)

Of course in the end, Obama may not be any better, but he's off to a good start. At least, for the first time in at least 8 years, I have a little hope.

He is a great orator. The greatest perhaps since the Founding Fathers and Abraham Lincoln. Now let's see if he can clean up the mess in Washington. With 10 years as a Professor teaching US Constitution Law at U of Chicago; I think he has a damn good idea where to start cleaning up the shit hole that Washington has become. He also surrounded himself with an allstar cast; so I am sure he is getting valuable information.
