SPANISH FORK, Utah – The Utah cave where a 26-year-old medical student died earlier in the week will be closed permanently and his body will not be removed.

State and county officials made the announcement Friday afternoon, saying it was simply too dangerous to try to recover John Jones' body.

Jones died late Wednesday about 28 hours after getting wedged into a tight, unmapped passage of Nutty Putty Cave.

State officials plan to meet Monday to discuss the best way to permanently close the cave.

They almost had him out , then the support they drilled into the cave wall gave way. I think that broke his neck.

i did some cave diving on SCUBA in florida, it scared the hell out of me. i did not like an overhead environment, no clear shot to the surface. many people have died in florida springs caves. rangers would take your PADI card so they knew who did not come back and they could launch a body recovery. never would go in any cave again, wet or dry.

Awww fuck it, I'm going to hell anyway.

I was wedged into a tight, unmapped passage of Nutty Putty Cave, myself last night, I just licked it for some lubrication.

That is standard procedure to leave a body in a cave if it unsafe to bring it out, there is no point in risking the rescue teams life if they are unable to help.

I know that has happened to many miners over the years.

I've been potholing a few times, very interesting but dodgy as fuck, I remember there was a large cave in Cumbria near Penrith, part of the cave was called the "cheese press" you had to literally breath in to get through it. Some guys in the party had major shit fits when they thought they were trapped for a few seconds.

Nice.

I'm not exactly claustrophobic, but the idea of getting pinned in some lightless hole under the earth makes me freak out a little.
