I understand the want/need to be private. There are certain things I keep underwraps (albeit, not much). But I just have to ask, why are some members here SO worried about it? I share my first name. Which, actually that in itself would already make me super vulnerable. But I guess I am not scared. I'm not worried about some internet crazy stalking me. I've been around the net for years. Met some people (from other than mommy forums I might add) and have never had an issue. What is it that we're worried about? I honestly want to know.

Maybe because crazy people will stalk you and use it against you?

Internet stalking doesnt count.
Some of the best relationships I have had are from opening myself up and having some communication.
Using it against me? As of late, certain information was relayed to certain members. Certainly not something I have told or posted here yet.

it is naive to think there aren't plenty of internet loonies out there. my sheriff dept. has an internet crime unit, as many do, for stalking and of course child porn. i have been warning people for years against posting their cute little kiddies' photos online...those pics are often converted to porn.
another example...someone posted my personal information on a website containing cop-haters. to me it was an invitation to harm me. as a long-time cop, i take that VERY seriously.
the nutjobs are out there in droves. and some might be attracted to a site of this nature.

I would say it does count. A teenager committed suicide because she was stalked / harassed online. Not sure what you mean by that...

You're absolutely right. If you're not willing to open yourself up & risk some vulnerability how can you get closer to people?

The thing with this site is that the info people have posted at other sites has been posted here as material for mocking. That's the way of it. I think it has happened at the site you're at & I used to be at too - people knew some shitty thing about someone and used it to shut them up in an argument. Plus it happened at my site. I had to create a separate room for "old battles" because of it. But, that is a different type of information.
I think the information of concern right now is stuff like posting links to poeple's real full names, and other things like that also known as "Personally identifiable Information or "PII". (At least that's
my concern - because I am an adult who knows that what I share in terms of my opinion or my family situation or the fact that I had foot surgery in online discussions become public once I post it.) And, make no mistake, jack is right. People commit all kinds of nasty acts using information gleaned from the Internet. Identity theft, stalking, etc.
It's a really popular type of crime because it's so damned easy.
I will not be participating at this forum.
This is a toxic place. Goodbye.

Some people like to pretend they are mortally offended and worried about having their real names revealed online just to try and get people they don't like in trouble and/or banned.
N'est-ce pas Frank?

I don't think it's a matter of fright for some. For some, it's a matter of principle. For example, I think it is very offensive that people like OP and Lumpy will go out of their way to try and indicate that personal info. I guess you can say I've always hated punks and that level of immaturity. I also think it is a bad and highly lubricated slippery slope to let members embark on. Just bad news all around, especially when you KNOW assholes like those guys will joyfully engage in that type of thing. Bad apples ruining the barrel, I know.
