Sylar Newton abused before disappearance, witnesses say
.

A search warrant released Friday shed light on the hours before the disappearance of a 2-year-old Flagstaff boy whose body authorities believe was found in a wash weeks after he went missing.

Sylar Newton went missing the night of July 24 from Beaver Creek Campground, near the community of Rimrock.

Authorities conducting a criminal investigation say that skeletal remains found in a ravine about 2 miles from the campground are Sylar's and that someone tried to hide the body. A medical examiner has yet to make a final determination on the identity.

Judge Mary Hamm of Seligman Justice Court signed a warrant July 25 allowing the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office to search property belonging to Sylar's custodial mother, Christina Priem, and her mother, Nancy Collins.

Priem and Collins had been visiting the campsite with Sylar, Priem's son and daughter, and a 14-year-old family friend.

The search warrant said campers reported seeing either Priem or Collins be "verbally abusive" to the boy and "push Sylar to the ground because he could not find his shoes." Campers also told investigators they heard the child crying between 7:30 and 9:30 p.m. but could not hear anything after.

Priem's daughter, 11, told detectives that earlier in the afternoon, she saw Sylar staggering and then could not wake him, the warrant said.

Records indicate the family friend told detectives he heard Sylar had got into Collins' lockbox and ingested a muscle relaxant. Collins told detectives she knew of another time when Sylar had ingested her medication. She said her lockbox was kept in her car, but other family members told detectives it could have been in the tent.

Collins admitted to smoking pot the same day Sylar went missing, the search warrant showed.

Records sent to the Sheriff's Office by Flagstaff Police Department revealed that "both mother and grandmother have an extensive history with the police involving drugs, assault, child abuse and child neglect."

No one has been named as a suspect, and a reward of up to $3,500 is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of anyone involved in Sylar's death. Anyone with information can contact Yavapai Silent Witness at 800-932-3232

still no arrests.

RIMROCK, Ariz. -- The Yavapai County Sheriff's said the remains found Aug. 10 outside Beaver Creek Campground are that of Sylar Newton, 2.

In a news release, the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office said it is now awaiting toxicology test results as it continues its investigation into Sylar's death.

Sylar Newton was camping with his custodial mother and her family July 25 when they reported that he wandered away. A search turned up no sign of him.

His remains were found weeks later at the bottom of a wash near the campsite.

According to investigators, witnesses at the campground told detectives Sylar appeared as if he was under the influence of a narcotic or medication.

Investigators are treating Sylar's disappearance and death as a criminal investigation.

The reward in this case has grown to $8,000 for information leading to an arrest in the case.

Thankyou Tiki! i had not forgotten about Sylar, and was waiting for something to break.

The Daily Courier
As the investigation continues into the death of a 2-year-old boy at a campground near Sedona this past July, Yavapai County Sheriff's detectives on Monday arrested the boy's custodial mother on drug charges.

YCSO announced Monday that Christina Priem, 36, is in custody in the Yavapai County Jail in Camp Verde on three counts of involving a minor in a drug offense. Authorities arrested Priem in Flagstaff.

Priem was the caretaker of 2-year-old Sylar Newton, who she reported missing this past July from the Beaver Creek Campground. In August, Sylar's remains were found near the area.

Monday's arrest results from the ongoing investigation by YCSO into Sylar's disappearance and death. Detectives are not yet releasing the specific charging details regarding the counts against Priem.

Sylar went to the Beaver Creek Campgrounds with Priem, Priem's two children, a family friend and Priem's mother, Nancy Collins, on July 23. Priem said she last saw Sylar at 12:30 a.m. on July 25 in a tent with the family, and discovered him missing at 1:45 a.m.

A family member called the Sedona Fire Department about 15 minutes later. The campground host called the Sheriff's Office at 2:30 a.m. and deputies arrived about 30 minutes later.

A massive search began to find Sylar, who went missing wearing only a diaper. DNA tests on human remains found less than two miles from the campground this past August confirmed Sylar's identity, according to the YCSO in October.

Witnesses at the campground in July told detectives Sylar appeared as if he was under the influence of a narcotic or medication, YCSO spokesman Dwight D'Evelyn said at the time.

On Monday, D'Evelyn couldn't say if there is a connection between pending toxicology reports on Sylar and Priem's arrest on drug charges.

"They're still in the review and have not been released. That's part of this ongoing case," he said of the pending results, adding that the results are expected to be released "fairly soon."

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. - Police have arrested Nancy Collins, 57, in connection with 2-year-old Sylar Newton’s death investigation.

Officers from the Flagstaff Police Department arrested Collins just after 10 a.m. Saturday morning on a child abuse warrant, and she was booked into the Coconino County Jail District Detention Center.

Officers said they found Collins at a motel in Flagstaff.

Collins, Sylar's custodial grandmother, was also charged with felony drug violations.

The Yavapai County Sheriff's Office said detectives are still encouraging anyone with information regarding Collins and Sylar's custodial mother, Christina "Tina" Priem, to contact Detective John McDormett at (928) 771-3260. Callers may remain anonymous by contacting Yavapai Silent Witness at (800) 932-3232.

On Thursday, detectives announced additional charges of intentional child abuse against 36-year-old Priem. She had previously been arrested and charged with three counts of involving a minor in a drug offense, charges which authorities said on Thursday related to Sylar's death. Priem's total bond amount was set at $300,000.

Detectives had been searching for Collins since Thursday.

Detectives said minor children were exposed to drugs during the time Priem and her family and friends -- including Sylar -- went camping at the Beaver Creek campground on July 23.

Sylar was reported missing from the campground on July 25. His remains were found by a relative in August in a wash outside of the campground, weeks after an extensive search for the toddler had ended.

Sylar Newton

August...this child has not been buried yet! i have to do some more research.
edit: funeral home says:

Due to legal reasons, Sylar is still in the custody of the Medical Examiner's office. We have only accepted a few donations (less than $500, being held in a special account) towards the funeral expenses when he is released. It is not money that is the issue, it is the legal system and possible charges and other proceedings that may need evidence that only Sylar can provide.

Yavapai Sheriff's detectives announced the new charges as a result of the ongoing investigation into the death of 2-year-old Sylar Newton. Christina Priem was charged with the one count of child abuse "when done intentionally or knowingly." Her bond was increased from $250,000 to $300,000.

According to the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office, the child abuse charges involve Sylar's access and apparent ingestion of prescription medication not intended for his use. Sylar was able to access medications and drug containers that were brought to the campground by Priem and Collins. The drug of concern, prescribed to Priem, is used to control seizures and panic attacks. He was given cold and pain medication, according to YCSO.

Witnesses told authorities that Sylar appeared to be under the influence and could barely open his eyes the night he was reported missing. Even though Priem and Collins were advised of his condition, they did not seek medical help. Authorities believe the unintended use of the drugs was a factor in his death.
