Mother who 'led a double life' smothered her daughter.

Daily Mail
2nd August 2010

A woman smothered her three-year-old daughter with her Piglet toy, a court heard today.

Helen Caudwell, 42, allegedly used the soft toy to kill her daughter Bethany Caudwell-Kennerly after leading a double life, convincing two men they were the father of her child.

She fell pregnant with Bethany - her fourth child - while she was conducting relationships with three men in 2005.

Her husband at the time, Ian Caudwell, had tried to have a vasectomy reversed so that he could give his wife, of Cheadle Heath, Stockport, Greater Manchester, a fourth child but it had been unsuccessful and she had fallen pregnant by her lover Mark Davies, the court heard.

Bethany Caudwell-Kennerly: Her mother is accused of suffocating her with her toy piglet.

Supermarket Assistant Helen told both Mr Davies and her third boyfriend Miles Kennerly, of Sandbach, that they were Bethany's father and they both treated the girl as their own - unbeknown to the other.

Caudwell went on to divorce husband and father of her three other children Ian Caudwell and married Miles Kennerly in May 2009.

Within months Caudwell filed for divorce, the court heard. In the days leading up to the killing she had made comments about not wanting Miles Kennerly to see Bethany and 'doing away with herself'.

Bethany was found dead by Caudwell's concerned colleagues after she had told them she wasn't going to work because she had 'suffocated Bethany'.

Recent paternity tests confirmed Mark Davies to have been the girl's father.

Mr Ray Wrigglesworth QC, prosecuting at Manchester Crown court, said: 'In late 2004 Helen Caudwell met Mr Davies and began an affair with him.

'A few months later in February 2005 she started a relationship with a third man - Miles Kennerly. During this period she continued to have a sexual relationship with her husband, Mr Davies and Mr Kennerly.'

In October 2005 she became pregnant and in July, 2006, she gave birth to Bethany.

'During her pregnancy and after Bethany was born she continued to lead both Mr Davies and Mr Kennerly to believe that they were the father of Bethany.

'Both men visited the child, gave birthday presents and had regular meetings. Neither was aware of the other's existence.'

On the night of the October 2, Bethany, aged three, was sleeping at her mother's home.

'On this particular night mother and daughter were the sole occupants of that flat,' Mr Wrigglesworth said. 'The prosecution say that at some stage during that night the defendant, who knew what she was doing, intentionally and unlawfully suffocated her daughter.

'She had declared a few hours earlier that it was her intention to "do away with herself'. But the prosecution say that having killed the child, although she made an attempt to commit suicide, we say she didn't have the courage to take her own life.'

The court heard that after falling pregnant with Bethany, Caudwell and her first husband continued to live at the family home 'for the sake of the children'. But in 2007 Caudwell filed for divorce and moved in with Mr Kennerly at his home in Sandbach.

Mr Kennerly and Mr Davies continued to see Bethany, each believing she was their daughter.

Four months after marrying Mr Kennerly she moved out of their home into a flat. He continued to see Bethany - as did Mr Davies.

A week before Bethany's death Caudwell met with Mr Kennerly and told him she had instructed solicitors and that 'he wouldn't be allowed to contact his daughter'.

That night she was visited by her ex-husband who discussed her plans to divorce Mr Kennerly.
After he left, Caudwell spent over an hour on the phone to her mother during which she claimed 'I just feel like doing away with myself'.
Caudwell had been due to work the following morning at Morrisons supermarket in Edgeley and when she did not show up Kath Shaw was instructed to call her.
The court heard that Caudwell told Kath "I won't have a job anymore. I have done something stupid. I have suffocated Bethany."
Kath and her boss Paul Morgan were so concerned they ran to Caudwell's house where they found her with cuts to her wrists and Bethany dead on a double bed.
Mr Morgan told police he could hear Caudwell wailing 'I couldn't let him take her'.
police found a suicide note at the address which was written to ex-husband Ian saying 'All I have ever done is uspet people all my life. I can't stand the thought of him having Beth and making her life a misery as he has done mine.
'I am really sorry. I do love you and I always have done. Please look after my babies and help them to understand that I couldn't take anymore. We are at peace now and watching down on you and some time in years to come we will all be reunited. He can't hurt us anymore.'
The court heard she also instructed Ian Caudwell to withdraw all her money from her bank leaving her pin number and card.
During police interviews Caudwell claimed she must have rolled on top of Bethany during the night and suffocated her, but a post-mortem concluded that account was 'implausible'.
The jury heard that scientific evidence of the scene revealed that a soft toy Piglet which was found next to Bethany had an imprint of her dummy on it as well as saliva and blood.
Mr Wrigglesworth said this 'was moderately strong support that the imprint on the soft toy was made by the dummy (pacifier).
'This was put to the defendant that this was the method of suffocation. This toy was pressed down over the face down on to the dummy.'
Caudwell denies murder. The trial continues.

i am wondering why all the secrecy...i have not been able to locate even one photo of this woman anywhere. :bag:
i've emailed Daily Mail about that.

The father of a three-year-old girl who was allegedly killed by her mother wept in court as he spoke of the last time he saw her alive.

Helen Caudwell, 42, of Stockport, denies murdering Bethany by suffocating her with a cuddly toy in October 2009.

Mark Davies told Manchester Crown Court he had taken his daughter to the park the last time he saw her.

His affair with Ms Caudwell ended soon after Bethany was born but he still saw her regularly, he told the court.

Bethany was found dead on the morning of 3 October in a bedroom of Ms Caudwell's flat in Redwood Close, Cheadle Heath.

Her Piglet toy was lying next to her. Her saliva and blood were both found on the toy, the court heard previously.
'Perfect' relationship

Mr Davies described his daughter's relationship with Ms Caudwell as "perfect".

However, he told the court he did not know Ms Caudwell was leading a double life, and his daughter called two other men "Daddy".

i have now emailed 4 UK news outlets asking for a photo of this woman on trial. no luck.

A mother accused of murdering her three-year-old daughter feared the tot was being sexually abused by her husband, a court heard.

Helen Caudwell was also scared that Miles Kennerley, who denied the abuse allegation in court, planned to kidnap Bethany Caudwell Kennerley and take her to Spain. it sounds to me like this woman was a paranoid nutter.

Caudwell is accused of killing Bethany by smothering her with a soft toy before attempting to kill herself in October last year.

She denies the murder charge, claiming she does not remember how Bethany died. Manchester Crown Court heard she had been anxious, and at times hysterical, in the days and hours leading up to Bethany’s death on October 2.

Jurors heard she had been desperate to stop her husband, Mr Kennerley, gaining access to Bethany and confided in a close friend and colleague, Kath Shaw, earlier that week.

Mrs Shaw said Caudwell told her she was seeing a solicitor ‘to get an injunction to stop him seeing Bethany, because she was worried’.

She added: "She thought Miles was going to take her out of the country."

Mrs Shaw broke down as she said Caudwell claimed to have seen Mr Kennerley touch and talk to Bethany inappropriately.

She said: "I told her she needed to speak to somebody because it didn’t seem right."

Mrs Shaw said Caudwell was particularly concerned that Mr Kennerley should not see Bethany at the weekend.

But the court heard that on Friday, the day Bethany died, she reluctantly relented.

That afternoon Mr Kennerley went to Bethany’s nursery, Ladybridge Primary in Cheadle, demanding more access to the child.

He believed Bethany to be his daughter, although DNA tests later revealed that he was not.

After two hours of negotiations overseen by teachers, it was agreed Mr Kennerley should see Bethany for one hour that weekend, on Sunday.

Afterwards Caudwell was ‘agitated’ and ‘hysterical’, telling Mrs Shaw: "I have to let him have her. I can’t let him have her."

The next day Bethany’s body was found at Caudwell’s address on Redwood Close, Cheadle Heath.

of course she won't testify.

MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS:
A mother accused of killing her toddler cannot be held responsible for her actions, a court heard.

Lawyers for Helen Caudwell said she should be cleared of murder on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

Jurors heard she was suffering from an abnormality of mind at the time and has now blocked out what happened.

Ms Caudwell, 42, is accused of deliberately smothering three-year-old Bethany Caudwell Kennerley last October at her flat in Redwood Close, Cheadle Heath, Stockport, before trying to kill herself. She denies the charge, saying she does not know how the tot died. BOLLOCKS.

On day six of the trial at Manchester Crown Court, jurors heard she had been suffering from a major depressive episode in the weeks leading up to Bethany’s death on October 2.

Consultant forensic psychiatrist John McKenna said she had been on Prozac since 2001 and that stressful events in her life at the time – including rows with her husband over custody – had reached a ‘crescendo’ in the week before Bethany’s death.

He also noted a history of depression in her family and a disturbed childhood.

He said: “I think it’s more likely than not that at the relevant time she was suffering from an abnormality of mind caused by a psychiatric disorder, specifically a depressive disorder, and that state of mind significantly affected and morbidly coloured her rational judgement.”

He said this meant she could not properly weigh up courses of action.

Ms Caudwell will not give evidence. The court heard she has tried to kill herself twice after her arrest, once at Wythenshawe Hospital and once in prison.

Prosecutors say the defendant is lying about her amnesia. Ray Wrigglesworth, prosecuting, noted she had gone to bingo the night before Bethany’s death and had appeared calm and controlled on the day she died.

Under cross-examination, Dr McKenna conceded she could be trying to ‘pull the wool over everyone’s eyes’.

Appearing for the prosecution, consultant forensic psychiatrist Laurence Chesterman said a third of murder suspects claim to have amnesia.

He said he found her explanation ‘highly implausible’ and he believed Ms Caudwell’s depression had been mild in the run-up to Bethany’s death.

once, a few years back, my "Crimes and Trials" forum at 24 was #1 on google, when you googled that particular phrase. i don't know how that happens, probably just an accident of spiderbots, but it's a very nice advert for forum.

Mother jailed for smothering daughter with Piglet toy
Helen Caudwell had denied murdering three-year-old Bethany.

A mother from Greater Manchester has been jailed for life for smothering her three-year-old daughter with a Piglet cuddly toy.

Judge Clement Goldstone said: "Quite apart from the life sentence which you have imposed upon yourself, in more ways than one, you have brought indescribable and permanent grief to the lives of those who doted on Bethany and loved her."

Helen Caudwell, 42, had denied murdering Bethany at her home in Stockport on 2 October last year.

Judge Clement Goldstone QC ordered her to serve a minimum term of eight years at Manchester Crown Court.
