KABUL, Afghanistan — Thousands of demonstrators angered over the burning of a Koran in Florida mobbed offices of the United Nations in northern Afghanistan on Friday, overrunning the compound and killing at least seven foreign staff workers, according to Afghan officials.
There were conflicting reports on the total number of people killed and whether two of the victims had been beheaded. Five Afghans were also reported killed.
The incident began when thousands of protesters poured out of the Blue Mosque in Mazar-i-Sharif after Friday prayers and attacked the nearby headquarters of the United Nations, according to Lal Mohammad Ahmadzai, spokesman for Gen. Daoud Daoud, the Afghan National Police commander for northern Afghanistan.
After disarming or shooting the United Nations compound’s guards, the crowd surged inside. Mr. Ahmadzai said that eight of the foreign staff workers, whose nationalities were not known immediately, were killed by gunfire, and that two others were captured by the mob and beheaded. Other reports said that the operations center was burned down as well.
Fran Ingram, an assistant at the Dove World Outreach Center, in Gainesville, Fla., said that the church had burned the Koran after a ceremony on March 20.
this stupid selfish attention-whore pig-fucking piece of shit is going to "put Mohammed on trial" now and probably hang him in effigy. so there will be HUNDREDS of murders to satisfy his evil blood-soaked soul. story here:
The controversial pastor who has sparked riots in Afghanistan which have left at least 20 dead has said he would rather die than stop preaching against Islam.
Reverend Terry Jones said his right to speak out was more important than the lives of those who had died during the unrest - or any American soldiers who might be killed in the future.
He said he would continue his campaign against Muslims even though every single one of his 30 parishioners had deserted him.
Meanwhile, the White House on Monday called the Koran burning "un-American".
How is this "un-American"?
In an interview with the Wall Street Journal published on Sunday, US Gen David Petraeus also condemned the burning, calling it "hateful, extremely disrespectful and enormously intolerant".

I don't see this as denying Muslims the freedom to practice their religion.
If I were to burn a Bible, the Book of Mormon, the Torah, the Rig Veda or books containing the rituals, doctrines and principles of the Church of Jesus Christ Christian it is a "freedom" of expression.
Just like the "Piss Christ" . . . without $15,000 of government funding (NEA).
stupid hillbilly. he won't be able to pay the peace bond, so hopefully his attention-whore demonstration won't happen today, causing the murders of more people.

Police were called Thursday night after Koran-burning pastor Terry Jones discharged his firearm in the parking lot of a television station, where he had just conducted an interview.
"Pastor Terry Jones just discharged his firearm in our parking lot," myFOXdetroit.com announced on its Facebook page.
"He claims it was fired by accident. The shot went into the floorboard of his car. No one was hurt. Police on scene."
Southfield Police confirmed the gun accidentally discharged. No charges were filed, and police gave the gun back to Jones before sending him on his way.
The FOX-owned WJBK television station where the incident took place has a policy of not allowing guns inside the building.
The Florida pastor plans to hold a demonstration in Detroit on Friday outside the biggest mosque in the United States to protest Islamic law.
He faces a jury trial Friday morning to decide if the rally can go ahead.
Earlier Thursday, a judge ordered Jones to pay what is known as a "peace bond," for his planned Good Friday protest of the Islamic Center of America.
Prosecutors sought up to $100,000 in fees from Jones for extra police in fear of a riot.
After a half hour of instructions from 19th District Judge Mark Somers explaining the complaint against them, Jones and his assistant, Wayne Sapp, said they understood the charges and then declined legal counsel.
Both men were called into court to answer questions from the prosecutor, who accused them of planning to disturb the peace, and take part in ethnic intimidation by holding a demonstration.
The judge denied Jones' request for the permit required to legally have the protest, then gave him a choice: Pay the bond or go to trial.
I wonder if he burned the Koran in Effigy, if it would be considered an acceptable way to conduct his protest? I am sure the Muslim community would be as outraged, but could he bypass the court with this technicality? Strange how it's OK for religious nuts to harass families of fallen soldiers at their funerals but this nut isn't allowed his freedom of expression. Why is it OK to hurt family members of soldiers in their hours of grief?
A judge late today sent two Florida pastors to jail for refusing to post a $1 bond.
The stunning development came after a Dearborn jury sided with prosecutors, ruling that Terry Jones and Wayne Sapp would breach the peace if they rallied at the Islamic Center of America in Dearborn.
Prosecutors asked Judge Mark Somers for $45,000 bond. Somers then set
bond at $1 each for the two pastors. They refused to pay. And Somers ordered them remanded to jail.
According to the Wayne County prosecutor's office, both Jones and Sapp are prohibited by the court from going to the mosque or adjacent property for three years.
Late Friday the two pastors posted their $1 bond and left jail, according to Dearborn Mayor Jack O'Reilly Jr.

A controversial Florida pastor has staged another Koran-burning ceremony to protest about the imprisonment of a Christian clergyman in Iran.
Publicity-grabbing Terry Jones, who caused international outrage and violent protests when he filmed the burning of the Islamic holy book last March, set several copies of the Koran on fire in a similar incident on Saturday night.
A gathering of approximately 20 people attended the ceremony at the Dove World Outreach Center, the small church that Jones heads in Gainesville, Florida.
The church’s website said that a few people left the building as the Koran, which had been soaked in kerosene, was set alight. An image of the Muslim prophet Muhammad was also burned.
