Bethany Storro, the 28-year-old Vancouver woman who confessed to dabbing her own face in caustic acid, then lying to police and the public about it, made her first court appearance this morning, pleading not guilty to theft charges.
Storro walked into the Clark County Superior Courthouse with her lawyers. Her face, deep red and scarred from severe burns, was not covered, except for her nose, which was bandaged.
She appeared before Judge John F. Nichols in a brief hearing. She waived a reading of three felony theft charges and entered a not-guilty plea. Her lawyer told Nichols that Storro, who is hearing impaired, would be reading the judge's lips during the proceeding. another fucking lie. she heard just fine during TV poor me interview.
The judge set a trial date of Dec. 20.
Storro agreed to the terms of supervised release. She may not leave the Portland or Clark County area and was ordered not to contact the victims of her alleged theft, which include a fitness club and Safeway, both of which raised money for her.
She was also ordered to comply with the rules of Elahan Place, a psychiatric facility where she will be living. She voluntarily agreed to stay at the facility while awaiting trial. Elahan Place is described on a Clark County government web site as a residential rehabilitation facility for "psychiatrically impaired adults."
After the hearing, Storro walked out of the courtroom into a throng of local and national media, some of whom asked Storro questions. She did not respond. She was escorted by her lawyer and police into the Clark County Sheriff's Office, where she was booked, photographed and released.
