(CNN) -- After the Academy Awards ceremony in 2010, there was a great deal of hope that the glass ceiling had finally been shattered in Hollywood.
"The Kathryn Bigelow" effect was coined by some industry observers who believed that her win for "The Hurt Locker," the first Oscar for a woman director, would open doors of opportunity for females behind the camera. The riveting film "Precious" yielded a best supporting actress win for African-American performer Mo'Nique, and the first ever statuette for an African-American screenwriter in the best adapted screenplay category went to Geoffrey Fletcher.
But that was last year.
This year there was a decided dearth of diversity in the Oscar nominations. There are no women or people of color among the director nominees, and the acting nominees are all white. Javier Bardem, who is up for best actor for his role in "Biutiful,' is a Spaniard and therefore European.
Which raises the question: Why in an era of ever increasing diversity among movie audiences is that not being reflected among the nominees for Hollywood's most prestigious award? Where are the diverse faces both in front of and behind the cameras?
It's a complex issue that involves both supply and demand.
More focus has been put on actors of color and women this year because of their stellar performances last year. African-Americans snagged nine nominations last year and, in addition to Mo'Nique and Fletcher, Roger Ross Williams won the award for best documentary (short subject) for "Music by Prudence."
But historically far fewer meaty dramatic roles, which are beloved by the academy, have been written for or awarded to actors of color, and women behind the camera are greatly outnumbered by men.
There are too many award shows. It's stupid. Then add in the red carpet coverage and all that nonsense. How many times does a singer or actor need to get an award for the same fucking thing?? Isn't it bad enough that they get paid bazzzillions of dollars to make the song or movie??

It's not that there are too many award shows, there are too many hours of empty headed morons talking about award shows and re-showing film of idiots taking bows and making phony smiles to the legions of jobless cameramen and women. Most actors are basically unintelligent and untrained people with very low standards and in desperate need of having their very fragile egos stroked repeatedly. I suggest we all turn off our TV's for 90 days or so, and get a fresh point of view on the total nonsense that's broadcast daily.
I personally don't place much importance on award shows in general, i used to think awards ceremonies like the Oscars actually mattered but not so much now. They all seem to across like a "hey!, aren't we all great?" love in.
i hate it when they show footage of people in the film industry who have died in the last 12 months and people in the audience pretend to cry and be upset like they give a shit.
I see Colin Firth is set to be almost a shoe in for the best actor gong, as usual with the oscars portray a character who has some form of disability (in the Kings speech's case, a speech impediment) and just wait for the awards and accolades to come pouring in.

I loves him. British hotness.
It's not like he is going to be recognized for any of his classical work.

could you say what was sad? i'm not watching.
It was justsad to see him that way..hard for him to get some stuff out. I am sure it was scripted..but he did have a great sense of humor and timing. Good part was when he came out, looked at Ann Hathaway, did a triple take and said Where were YOU when I was acting??
James Franco did 127 hits before the show.
Anne Hathaway is best served by looking pretty and not talking.
The Oscars are becoming "Glee."
I hope James Franco brought enough weed for everyone.
