PHOENIX - A Valley man has been arrested for allegedly striking and killing two dogs in a Phoenix neighborhood while driving under the influence.
Court documents from Maricopa County Superior Court show George Guzman was taken into custody Monday night on charges of animal cruelty, reckless driving, criminal damage, and driving under the influence.
Guzman was reportedly driving westbound on Tonto Street near 21st Avenue with no headlights and swerving when he struck his own German shepherd as well as a neighbor's Chihuahua mix.
According to court documents, the neighbor's dog died instantly and Guzman dragged his own dog approximately 204 feet to his home on Tonto Street.
After getting out of his vehicle, Guzman went down the street where several children and adults were screaming and crying. Court documents show the owner of the dog told Guzman he had killed the family's pet as well as dragged his own dog down the street.
According to court documents, Guzman stated in response, "I'm not drunk," and went back to his home to check on his German shepherd.
Police responded to the scene and placed Guzman under arrest. His dog was reportedly still alive and officers were preparing to bring the animal to an emergency veterinary clinic when the dog died.
According to court documents, Guzman showed no remorse for killing the two animals and made a statement to police saying, "I don't care about dogs. I've probably hit 1,000 dogs in my life."
Guzman made his initial court appearance Wednesday where bond was set at $9,800.
