Back in 2011 black Tottenham resident Mark Duggan was shot and killed by armed response officers after the car he was sitting in the back of was stopped because police intelligence suggested he was on his way to buy an illegal firearm.
The result? Riots in many cities of the UK supposedly in protest.
There was an inquest with a jury and the result was announced on friday. Mark Duggan was lawfully shot and killed by armed police.
Now Duggan was what we call a “wrong un” notorious in the area as a gangbanger although his criminal record only consisted of a handful of minor convictions he had a reputation for being a dangerous twat.
But of course his family are defending his corner and some people (mainly but not all black people) believe he was summarily executed by the police. Now there was a gun at the scene lying 20 yards away from the car. The claim was when his car was stopped he had a gun in his possession and he chucked it out the car window.
The police argue they had intelligence he might be armed, the family argue that how can the killing be lawful when Duggan was unarmed when he was killed? Which is a pertinent fact. But this has been made a racial issue if you are a black man in London you are more likely to be shot than a white guy.
So lawful? Or unlawful?
