Katelyn Markham, 22. Ohio - missing/murdered
Fairfield Echo
Search for Markham continued at Harbin Park
Scores of family and volunteers continue search for missing Fairfield woman.

FAIRFIELD — Two weeks after his daughter went missing, Dave Markham searches for the right words.

“It’s indescribable,” he said. “Just terrible.”

On Saturday afternoon, 14 days after his 22-year-old daughter Katelyn Markham was last seen, her father — accompanied by more than 100 family and volunteers — continued their search, this time inside Harbin Park, which is located about three miles from her apartment.

One of Katelyn’s friends, Victoria Chafin, who graduated with her from Fairfield High School in 2008, organized Saturday’s search. She said the search for Markham will continue until she’s found.

Chafin said Markham was set to graduate from college in a few weeks, and her father said she was going to move to Colorado to “spread her wings” for a couple of years. Instead, sometime late on Aug. 13 she was last seen in her Dorshire Drive apartment by her fiance John Carter. Her dog was locked up inside her bedroom, Chafin said.

“She wouldn’t get up and just leave,” Chafin said. “I don’t want people to give up hope. I hope we find her, she’s OK, happy and healthy and she can get back to a normal lifestyle.”

Just then, Chafin’s cell phone rang, and one of the group of searchers said they had found a hoop earring and a cell phone battery in the park. Chafin told them to collect the items and call the Fairfield Police Department, but Katelyn’s father said he never saw her wear that style of earrings.

As far as what happened to Markham, Chafin said everyone has different opinions, and she didn’t want to share hers in the media.

“All that matters is we find her,” she said. “It doesn’t matter who did it.”

Dave Markham, 50, said he has returned to work part-time. He sometimes can’t sleep at night. He takes it “one day at a time,” then added that “life don’t stop.”

He knows he also has to care for his other daughter, 15-year-old Ally. He thought about Ally, and when earlier this summer she wanted to go to Kings Island with her friends. He told her to never leave her friends.

“The way I feel right now, that’s why we act like that,” he said. “Nobody wants to feel like this.”

CrimeStoppers said they haven’t received any additional calls related to the case, despite the phone number being displayed on national television. A $5,000 reward is being offered for information leading to Markham’s whereabouts.

Fairfield police Lt. Kevin Haddix said the department received one tip from out West, but said police had already “checked it out.”

The missing persons case made national news Thursday night as the search for Markham continued. Katelyn’s fiance and several experts not affiliated with the case were interviewed by Nancy Grace for her show on CNN’s HLN.

During the show Carter was questioned about his motives and the timeline of events surrounding the case.

New hope in the search for a missing Fairfield college student. Katelyn Markham went missing August 13. Everything she had was left behind - except her red blackberry. Saturday, search crews looking for clues found a similar phone off Lick Road in Fairfield.

A bright phone in a tumble of weeds, it's the closest thing to a clue anyone has found. It was found off Lick Road and police entered the phone into evidence. The search organizers tell us that the search team also found a phone battery, then a hoop earring and a black converse sneaker. Katelyn's fiancee told us the phone definitely does not belong to her. He says her phone had a green gem on top, this one does not. Katelyn's fiancee also says she didn't wear hoop earrings and her black converse shoes were too small, so he doesn't believe any of the items were hers.

Search volunteer Brenda Kelley says, "I'm at least glad that somebody found something that could point in the right direction."

Victoria Chafin who organized Saturday's search says the area was targeted because it's secluded and spooky. Chafin says, "It's the type of road that you would maybe see teenagers go back into to find ghosts. But it's definitely a road that not a lot of people go on, especially at night."

Katelyn's friends say every search comes with conflicted emotions. "It's hard to come up with a feeling because you want her to be okay, but at the same time we want to find her," says Chafin.

Katelyn's friends say they'll meet to search again Sunday, starting at 9 a.m. near Lick Road.

There is a new Facebook Page discussing all aspects of Katelyns disappearance due to the fact the first Facebook is run by the fiance's family and friends and anyone that says anything negative about him is deleted.

He comes across as a bit of an odd bird to many people, that of course doesn't make him guilty but, it isn't helping him either.

Mock has been mentioned!

Looks like the "mod" is doing a good job on facebook, but with all due respect. I would love to see some of their members interact here as well. I think there would be less of a restraint to say something that they feel is important, without the ideals of censorship being imposed upon them. For example, I think this is who did it and why. Not that you are not getting the drift from their facebook page anyway. Ha!

that's why i often post our link at local news outlets for some cases...i like to hear the opinions/comments of locals and others, and often the news or facebook pages don't welcome certain viewpoints. they can be quite restrictive.

My heart certainly goes out for the father. His speech is much more normal than JC's use of past tense when speaking of Katelyn.

The new FB page also has some good information about what is going on from some of the local people. KM's cousin is even posting on it.

Apparently KM and JC were fighting at the festival either Friday or Saturday night because he spent $100 on raffle tickets. Maybe things were not as rosie as he is trying to make them appear.

Harvest Moon, I read also the raffle ticket story & possible squabble but, the Today Show said they spent the evening watching television! O.K.
Did they go to the Church Festival here or not?

I read on the facebook posts that Katelyn and John were at the festival Friday night. She got mad at him about spending $100. on raffle tickets, and several people saw them arguing. (Obviously this is unconfirmed rumor so please take with a grain of salt.)

Media is reporting that John left Katelyn's townhouse at 11:30 Saturday night after watching TV.

There are some questions in the timeline, with several locals posting that John and Katelyn didn't work on Saturday and spent the day together. LE has been silent on the entire timeline, and even John hasn't publicly stated when he got to Katelyn's house on Saturday-or if he spent Friday night there and spent all of Saturday with Katelyn.

Encouraging news. Keeping my fingers crossed that Tim and his team can locate Katelyn.

Interesting! Did anyone out there see Katelyn or John on Saturday? I've read nothing about anyone seeing them yet! Cheyne good post.

Looking at the pic of JC in post #127, I can tell he's a total putz, dweeb, loser, that saw the end of his relationship with Katelyn coming to an end. Unless he confesses, we may never know exactly what happened between them, but I'll stand by my initial post a week ago or so that stated she was ending things with him.

Insecure, and put into a rage, he ended up killing her. I doubt if it was premeditated, but after he felt he had gone too far, he had to finish the job. Unbelievable. This was a crime of passion. Very sad. I feel for any victim in these scenarios.

he has made many contradictory and self-serving statements. and we have no confirmation from LE that he "passed" a poly.

i am very glad TES is coming in, her Dad needs some answers.

FAIRFIELD - A reward for information about the disappearance of Katelyn Markham jumped to $25,000 Monday as the missing art student’s family invited a Texas search and recovery team to help coordinate the hunt for her.

Officials with Crime Stoppers said relatives and friends of Markham added $20,000 in reward money to the $5,000 from an anonymous contributor.

Tim Miller, founder and director of Texas EquuSearch Mounted Search and Recovery Team, was scheduled to arrive at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport at about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.

There just don't seem to be any other plausible reasons as to why Katelyn has suddenly disappeared. LE knows this. They're just waiting for him to crack or slip up.
