1936 The depression lingered on with unemployment continuing to fall to 16.9%, and Hitlers Germany continued to show the world it was not scared of anyone but the 1936 Olympics caused Hitler humiliation when his Aryan Supermen were dominated by the great Jesse Owens. Germany's Hitler, Italy's Mussolini and Japan formed an alliance which would show it's real reason for creation in World War 11. Many of Americas unemployed travelled to California hoping to get work but the the local police chief posted guards at main entrance points blocking the " undesirables" this was illegal and later stopped. The Boulder Dam was completed later renamed the Hoover Dam.
Some things don't change, do they?

I think it's cool to live a long life and see how much things change. I would like to know if she thinks it is better now or then. I also want to know if her parents saved peanut butter jars and coffee cans because they lived through the Great Depression.

Damn! I just posted a lenghty comment only to have it disappear when I checked on the spelling of a word I wasn't sure of. I forget to look to see if a have a PM. My parents saved everything even the sturdy cardboard in a roll of paper towels. My mom was always sure that someone would need one for something. They owned 5 nice cars in my lifetime and payed cash for them. They were well taken care of and lasted on average 14-15 yrs before being passed on. My dad kept a a file with tabs on each vechicle. They never had a credit card. My mother sewed, for 4 of us (from underwear to coats) and I never had a store coat until I was out of HS. They would be APPALLED at the way things are today. In all ways. Hey, My dad had a 1936 Pontiac and bought a new one in 1950. So, I got to drive the "36" to HS. It had running boards and a rubber bladed fan on the dash to defog the windows. I picked up my friends at the bus stop and had a can in the back seat for them to put their nickel in. Gas was about 25 or 30 cents in the 50's Last, but not least, bake glasses in a cake???? About 30 yrs ago, I bought a BD cake for a male friend. It was a nice big choclate cake. The baker showed me exactly where to have him cut into the cake. When he did a big choclate penis slid out. Now, I wonder if anybody will ever PM me again. LOL Gosh, I wish I could have figured out how to send a pic of my jet boat!

Your post was great! We've all been looking forward to you finding this thread that Cracker started for you. Thank you for sharing your experiences - so cool. You must have been pretty slick driving the Pontiac to high school. My dad loved cars, he would have talked your ear off about it! Of course, he always told me he walked everywhere when he was in high school, in the snow (in Southern California?), uphill both ways...

Even though I was still planning on becoming a sperm when you were born, I still feel like I have known you since then.
Happy Bday.

Ms. Older Than Dirt, YAY! You found us. Please don't read anything else I post. It isn't fit for your eyes. I am very impressed that you use the computer. I really am. You go, girl!
I have about a hundred questions for you. I'm not lucky enough to have anyone in my family still around from your era. If you find this thread again, I would like to know:
What did you think about the Korean War and The Cuban Missile Crisis and Viet Nam?
Do you think kids back then appreciated their parents more than kids do nowadays?
Was there really less crime back in the day or were there just fewer people to commit the crimes?
I remember when we landed on the moon. I bet you remember it much better than I do. What do you remember?
Where are you from, same place you were born? What did you spend your life doing? What is it like to raise a family and then see your family raise their own family?
If you could do it all over again, what would you change?
What have you liked the most in your quarter century on Earth?
Happy Birthday. I hope it was fabulous. I made the print big for you. hahaha

Just FYI. They'd be metal framed glasses. So they won't melt, and could be used as a shank in the crime forum if need arises.
You're welcome.

Now I really want to see that jet boat.
What would your neighbors think if your Mock friends all showed up for a post-birthday visit? Would they be surprised if they saw you out for a spin on the boat with a gun-wielding Lady Cop, a Duchess, a Blue Tiki, a Night Owl, a White Devil, a Prima Ballerina, a naked kitty, A Mad Housewife, a Dick, a Maggot, Dirty Harry, an Australian Church Lady, a J'sMom, a drooling bulldog, and a a few more colorful characters?
Don't worry, we're not really coming (this year).
