I thought states were going to attempt to put an end to that bullshit because so many innocent people were getting killed.

this was my reply to that in the Ohio thread:
that case brings up the topic of hot pursuit, a debate for many years. would be a good separate thread topic.
but what could they do? let him continue rampaging and killing?
most departments have hot pursuit guidelines and do their damndest not to endanger civilians whenever possible. that's why you often see slow pursuits. or even backing off. it's a tough call when the bastard is out there already endangering the public. you can't back off if he has killed someone.

A few years ago after a deadly chase incident, I thought I came up with a great idea: a gun that would shoot a gps device that would stick to a fleeing car. Then I discovered such a device already exists. I've never heard of one being used though. I suppose impediments to using it would be that it would require a person other than the driver to shoot it, and I guess there would have to be an initial chase to get close enough to the fleeing car to make the shot.

helicopters are a good tool also, especially if it's someone you cannot afford to lose sight of.
i recall one night a motorcycle doing 180 MPH on A1A in florida, super dangerous situation! and anyone who knows A1A realizes it is no place for a high-speed chase.
our chopper, Air One, followed the fool until he finally wiped out and splattered his brains all over the road. there was nothing anyone could do to stop him. we were just grateful he didn't kill anyone but himself.

Can you imagine going 180 on a bike! The fear alone would kill me long before the crash.

A1A is a scenic winding curvy oceanside road nearly the entire (East coast) length of florida. it was beyond crazy dangerous.

Been there, done that, but it wasn't me on A1A. Its probably a good thing that my harley won't do that kind of speed, its addictive. And the older I get the less stupid I try to be.
