This cute baby western lowland gorilla has become the star attraction after being introduced to visitors at Chicago's Lincoln Park Zoo yesterday.

The little female, who has not yet been named, was born last Thursday to doting 15-year old mother Bana, who gave birth for the first time, and 22-year-old silverback Kwan.

Don't get lulled into thinking gorillas are harmless. Even the old ones will bite you in the ass if you aren't careful.

I think the other one is black/white photo. He just looks wise because his mouth is shut. Just like all gorillas, as soon as he opens his mouth you realize how wrong you were.

Why are geladas so fucking loud?

Sky News

A species of ape is on the brink of extinction - even though they are addicted to sex.
Bonobo apes live in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) in central Africa and often have sex every few minutes. Smiley_emoticons_skeptisch they must be tired!

But because they have quite low fertility, are hunted for their meat and their babies are stolen as pets, their numbers are now perilously low.

The Bonobos are the closest species to human beings and are now classified as "endangered".

Evelyne Peteolot, from Lola Ya Bonobos Sanctuary near Kinshasa, told Sky News: "We know that the number of animals is diminishing in dramatic proportions.

"However we don't have accurate data, so we're unable to give exact numbers. It is so difficult with all the political problems here to be able to carry out a proper census."

Before the years of brutal civil war in the DRC it was estimated there were around 100,000 bonobo apes, now it is feared there are around 5,000.

Udel the fat slob! hah

Slumped on his back with a sweet wrapper stuck to his wide face, this enormous orangutan appears to have overdone the bananas - and every other foodstuff within reach.

The lethargic creature doesn't look capable of much monkey business, although keepers at his Indonesian zoo maintain he is a healthy weight.

'At 7am, the zoo feeds Udel with fruits. Then at 2pm they gave him fresh milk, and then at 4pm they gave him more fruits.

but zoo visitors throw him candy bars Taz

Scientists in Cameroon have warned that eating monkeys and apes could cause the next HIV.

They are already tracking a HIV-like virus called simian foamy virus, and fear more viruses could spread and lead to a global health crisis.

80 per cent of the meat eaten in Cameroon is killed in the wild and is known as ‘bushmeat’,with gorilla, chimpanzee or monkey favorites.

According to one estimate, up to 3,000 gorillas are slaughtered in southern Cameroon every year.

Elsewhere, the Washington-based Bush Meat Crisis Task Force estimates that up to five million tons of wild animals are being ‘harvested’ in the Congo Basin every year – the equivalent of 10 million cattle.

A study earlier this year by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), identified evidence of viruses, including simian foamy virus, in illegally imported wildlife products confiscated at several U.S. international airports, including John F. Kennedy International Airport, George Bush Intercontinental-Houston and Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International.

‘A recent surveyc onfirmed this is now in humans, especially in some of those who are hunters and cutting up the apes in the south-east of the country,’ he said.

He also believes that ebola may be present, and caused a recent mass death in a nearby village.

‘In the village of Bakaklion our brothers found a dead gorilla in the forest,’ said Felix Biango,a village elder.

‘They took it back to the village and ate the meat. Almost immediately, everyone died – 25 men, women and children – the only person who didn't was a woman who didn't eat the meat.’

This adorable photograph shows the moment a fascinated chimp spots itself in the mirror for the first time.

Chimps are thought to be among the few species that recognize their reflections.

And the inquisitive young chimp seemed to relish the moment it finally got to check itself out.

The animal is just one of several, aged between a few weeks and two years old, to have been taken in by animal sanctuary Lola ya bonobo .

The orphanage, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, rescued the chimps after their mother had been killed by poachers.
