I don't know if this is something that would interest you or not but...home improvement stores carry very realistic faux fireplaces, the flame is believable & they give off heat with a simple flip of a switch.

Actually, Duchess, we do not quite have room enough for one that size, but we did buy a smaller version for $99. Generates a fair amount of heat as well.
