Why, because the progressives in congress passed legislation forcing the banks to loan them the money that's why. Cracker has already talked about the boondoggle created by Bawney Frank, Chris Dodd, Fannie and Freddie.
Everything was fine as long as housing prices rose, but when that bubble burst, the shit flew everywhere. Housing will not recover until they quit artificially inflating the market; let it crash.
But OWS is another matter; this spontaneous out burst has been planned for years!
There is an evil storm coming everyone needs to prepare for.
That storm is outlined by cabal of progressives, radicals, communists, Islamists and anarchists in a book called “The Coming Insurrection”. I highly recommend everyone read that book yesterday. It details exactly what they are going to do.

If the buyer can fail, then the lender should also be able to fail.
But in this case they had agreements that they would be protected, that the government guaranteeded it's own loans with tax payer money.
The whole thing was one big fraud that was pulled off on the American people.
Have you heard that Bank of America Corp. is shifting $75 trillion worth of derivatives out of Merrill Lynch and into it's FDIC insured retail subsidiary, BoA? And the Federal Reserve is signing off on it.
