They usually come into my office and lay some house plans on me and ask me to do a heat loss computation. Then I size their house for the proper furnace or AC unit and give them a quote and the name of a contractor to install it. I mark up the quote 20-30% so the contractor can come in and make money on the unit as I will not sell it to a homeowner but will to a licensed contractor. Everyone makes money and then they go home and squak on internet forums.
Residential sucks and I have been trying to do only commercial for a long time now. but every once in awhile I will do one because the profit margin is higher, but its a bigger headache.
If I get lucky and do the job we make the air duct system in the shop and I usually make a good 50% after markup. I buy metal at .57 a lbs and sell it for 2.20 a lbs. after fabrication.

I think the psychology behind this kind of thinking is super funny. I'm pretty sure she is trying to use shame to cut sally from the imagined herd. Not sure, though, puberty robbed me of the ability to completely understand that kind of thinking.
