you are a dumb bitch-The other $10.00 covers the cost of the bus charter, chaperons, and insurance. Thanks to the sue happy society we live in, insurance costs for field trips (which must be taken out as a separate policy for each trip), has skyrocketed.

I can't believe the things some people will gripe about-you are one Lame bitch

What about the kids who come from families that can't afford that? What happens to them, are they left behind?

I hope no one tells me yes because that's bullshit. Either they all go or no one goes.

I can't say that every school does this, but the school system my kids are in have a 'scholarship program' Parents who are in hardship can apply to have their child's trip paid for by the program.

The PTA sponsor's it with the money they make from fundraisers.

I don't think it is bullshit. Don't have kids if you don't have the money to raise them in a decent manner. They give the parents several months notice for field trips. That is plenty of time to raise $15.

From my experience, field trips that include everybody (not the fancy overnight ones, just the ones that happen during the school day) have the cost of nonpayers built in. Many schools around here had to stop going places and had to start having visitors instead because HALF of the kids' parents don't want to pay and that was too much of a burden on the other parents. Only one of those families really didn't have the money, the rest just know that other parents will pay for their kid.

Many parents are fucked up. That's why schools/kids are fucked up. It isn't some cosmic mystery. People have kids to get the monthy check (welfare or child support) but don't want to actually spend any of the money on the kids.

It's bullshit when it's the kids that suffer and not the parents that put them in that position.

I used to think that, and still do about about a small minority of "poor" kids, but most are wearing $200 shoes and have smartphones and name brand clothes. The new "poor" is not having to pay your own rent.

Teachers know who is truly needy and build that in, no more than 5% of kids in a typical town school. Half will still not pay because they don't value education or learning experiences. Ghetto schools shouldn't even plan field trips.

Honestly, poor kids are usually the ones who DO have the money and give the most to charity fundraisers. It is the POS selfish lower middle class that doesn't want to pay, the ones who could EASILY pay.

Ideas about education are rarely ths same as what actually goes on. You would be pissed if you knew how people really are, Duchess. We have a member here who bitches about paying $10 for a field trip but has been known to post about expensive purses. That is what we mean when we say some white people act like niggers.

Before the gubberment took over the schools, no one had to pay to go on a field trip.

I'm with Cracker on this one. When my kids were in 5th grade, I chaired fund raising for a 5 day camp the kids were to attend at the end of the year. The cost per kid was roughly $290 at the beginning of the year. By raising around $8,000, we were able to get the cost down to roughly $260 per kid and kids had an opportunity to further reduce their own cost (by selling car wash coupons etc.). One kid sold so many coupons his cost was $5.00.

Anyway, I communicated from the very beginning and regularly about the costs. I offered people the opportunity to set aside money monthly etc.

When it came time to pay for the trip, I was freaking SHOCKED by the number of families that not only asked for "scholarships", they asked for FULL scholarships. They couldn't contribute a fucking dime...? I was pissed but besides bitch about it, there was nothing I could do.

Who paid for the "scholarships"? The PTA. So any money I had contributed during the year went to pay for those lazy fucks (and yes, if you can't contribute a dime, you're a lazy fuck).

If it hasn't already gone by the wayside, I'm pretty sure that trip will soon be a thing of the past.

They are selling tamales and baked goods here for a trip to New York.

How about a trip to Gettysburg? or to Andersonville?

New York? I won't help that effort because I don't agree with it.

Holy shit-are those numbers right? Were there roughly 260 kids in the 5th grade for that school? I would be totally schitzo with that many parents to deal with.

When my kids were in 5th they got sent to a wilderness camp for a week. We had to sign a contract stating that each of our children would put in 25 hrs towards fundraising efforts and the parents had to do at least 10. If you didn't fulfill the contract your child didn't go-no exceptions. We had six months and like a dozen or so fundraisers to choose from. It was easy and the trips ended up being completely paid for through the fundraisers. Our elementary school is a hell of a lot smaller though, between the 2 5th grade classes, there was a total of 31 kids.

What's wrong with a trip to NYC, Dick? I think that would be a great experience for youngsters.

Edit: Assuming it was to NYC, of course.

I should have known someone would check my damn numbers. hah

The trip cost probably turned out slightly less ($220+?) and the fundraising somewhere between $7,000-$8,000 (but $8k sounds so much better....). To answer your question, no, the 5th grade wasn't that big. We had four 5th grade classrooms -- around 120 students.

It was similar--a wilderness type trip with an outdoor science curriculum.

My kids moved on to middle school after that but I told the woman who took over the fundraising for the next year my thoughts about all the full scholarships and that I thought it ought to be handled differently. I did what everyone before me had done not knowing how many people were milking the system. It's fucked up.

If you smoke, drink alcohol, buy expensive clothes or shoes, buy movies or games, or eat lunch at a restaurant instead of packing your lunch, and you bitch about paying for your children to learn, YOU SUCK. And you are bad with money. You really can't afford the things you buy yourself.

Society used to be different. Poor people spend their money on necessities and food and taking care of their children. People with extra money bought nice things. Now the poor people spend their money on nice things and complain about having to pay for necessities. That is niggerish. Bling bling.

If you can't come off a few bucks for your kids field trip then you're most definitely a loser. I never did the fundraisers, however, I don't allow my kids to run around the neighborhood pushing chocolate turtles on strangers.
