Actually, Obama can't force his opinions on anyone, nor can Romney or anyone else. If that were possible, some posters would have had better luck trying to force you into agreeing with their opinions! Same is true for following ones moral compass; your compass, your direction - can't be forced.

Where I do agree with you is that Romney is politically smart to maintain the stance that gay marriage is a matter for the state legislatures and leave it at that. It's a plain fact; states currently have the authority to approve or deny gay marriage rights, period. So, Romney's being factual while simultaneously minimizing the negative impacts of his own personal views (opposing gay marriage) on those undecided voters whom he hopes to secure; some of whom support gay marriage. Imo, Obama will beat the drum loudly in support of gay marriage rights and Romney will respond by essentially saying that Obama's big attention-getter "ain't no big thing" legislatively.

Very much looking forward to the debates since Obama made his statement in support of gay marriage.

In order to claim some sort of "moral compromise" is being forced on you, you first need to define exactly what you find immoral in homosexuality.
