In case you don't already know, I like books. A lot. I would love books, but the paper cuts sting like a bitch and it makes the pages all smeared and sticky. I have tried the e-reader in my phone and thanks to certain....connections....I have about ten thousand popular books on file for reading enjoyment.
But fuck E-readers. They can't replace real, honest-to-god bound leather and wood pulp. You know what they can't do? They can't do this:
This is a book of laws written in Welsh circa mid 14 th century. Full manuscript and one of about 80 pieces of actual Welsh writing In. The. Fucking. World.
Sotheby's has it at auction, and the expected price is gonna be 500,000 to 700,000 pounds.
My birthday is coming up. Just throwing that out there.
The last time a bit of Welsh writing even close to this came up for auction was nearly a hundred years ago. It is expected this will be the last time something in Welsh comes up. Ever.
No E-Reader or computerized book will EVER fetch 700k at auction, even if it shot directly out of Bill Gates' ass and bounced off Steve Jobs' head on the way to the floor.
I have invented a new word for how badly I want this book, since no existing words quite cover it. I have a biblioner for this book.
It throbs.

Couple more lawn mowing jobs and I should be able to grab that up for you. Did you get a chance to steal that Voynich manuscript you promised me or is your Ninjitsu not what it once was?

How about if I trade you for a really great riddle or some sort of nifty turn of word?

I have a small collection of first editions. My favorite is the Dr. Doolittle with hand-colored illustrations. I have an interest in letterpress handset type.

Careful now - I know an aging book snob with fairly decent Ninjitsu suspected of several thefts involving first editions. And as soon as I receive the things I've requested from the vaults of The Vatican I'LL FORGET I KNOW HIM.

Nice. I have a pretty nice collection of old books, some firsts, but more just stuff that really tweaked me. My favorite is this old school primer from the turn of the last century, a current events book from 190-something that cladking would probably get a kick out of with his "good old days" rants. It does the usual bits of history to that point, with the entire last few chapters of the book devoted to the presidential assassination that the authors felt was the most horrific crime the country had faced to date, an act of cowardice that would live in infamy and be remembered as the turning point for the loss of innocence in our country.
I refer of course to the murder of William McKinley at the Pan-Am expo in Buffalo NY. The schoolbook authors, in that time pre-WW1, thought for sure McKinley's assassination would be the big news for the next few decades. Funny how time changes perspective, innit? Nowadays you'd be hard pressed to find anybody who even remembers we HAD a president McKinley, let alone that he got capped by some polack anarchist.

Then I'll go ahead and admit I have several first run old math primers and a few college math texts. I like to see how they taught it back in the day. One of them even has the pencil work of the student who used it.

i was a Mass. trial court law librarian before a cop, and we had some fascinating dusty old tomes in the law library. stuff dealing with witches etc., a lot of neat stuff pertaining to the Colony.

When I was in Children's Theatre I played Scrooge. It was a challenging role, because I am female. I found myself typecast. I still find people coming up to me today and calling me Scrooge.

Does my L Frank Baum Patchwork Girl of Oz count from 1913? I saw it in the Seattle markets once for $70. But that was back in the 90's! I just looked it up and you can read it for free!
I agree, nothing beats having a hard back book.

I'm good for about 150 lbs, but if I eat a couple extra sammiches a day I could put in say 5 or 10 more.

I still have my 1 st ed "Seduction Of The Innocent" by Fred Wertham MD. Nothing smells like an old book, unless it got wet.

I don't think people appreciate how funny you are. I always laugh at your stuff. Unless you are "having a moment," then I don't. Otherwise, you are in my top five.

Funny Cracks, I was just thinking exactly the same thing about you. That persona might work on the rest of these mugs but I suspect you're goddamn solid state quality peeps.
