I've heard that many people who have gastric bypass surgeries turn to alcohol (or other substances) once the can't get the same food fix.
I think if you prone to addiction it's not terribly unusual to trade one addiction for another.

I bet there's a lot of truth here too.
Some people just crave addiction like others are obsessive and/ or compulsive. Perhaps addiction is a sort of obsession. Rather than being obsessed by an idea or an activity they are obsessed by a substance or behaviour.

I can't help but feel that some who claim addiction are simply weak minded individuals who need to blame their bad behavior on something, what better way than to say they were drunk or fucked up on drugs. I don't think that applies in all cases but I can see it happening in some. Instead of taking personal responsibility for their actions they are content to blame others or their circumstances.

I think the way society is set up is very repressive to the individual and his ability to express all his talents. Many people when they reach puberty recognize this on some level and feel a need to experience how they think they're supposed to feel through alcohol or drugs. I used alcohol as an upper and then to excess to come down.
No doubt, like everything, most addictions and the like are individual. They have different causations and they are weighted differently.
Most people do fine until they hit puberty and then they start bouncing off the walls.
