Calligraphy is a fundamental art form in Islam, Maggot.
Arabic calligraphy is/was a common means of depicting Islamic beliefs and Arabic calligraphy was born of the Quran. So, when teaching about Islam and its impacts on culture, it would make zero sense to give an assignment in Chinese or Gothic calligraphy.
The same World Geography teacher explaining to kids that (most) Christians believe Jesus is the son of the only God and asking them to identify famous paintings of Jesus' resurrection (or to copy a Hebrew passage) isn't indoctrination either, unless the teacher positions the beliefs as truths that should be accepted and followed.
Anyway, the mom who led the outraged protest, Kimberly Herndon, had every right to exercise her freedom of speech and protest. Personally, I think she's a small-minded idiot. But, Herndon and like-minded Bible Belt parents succeeded in getting all district area schools closed down because of her fears and in getting the World Religions workbook assignment halted in that district.

What about the parents who are open minded and have more than a grain of common sense and don't fear what they don't know? No consideration for them, huh? It often seems like stupid people rule.

Parents who don't object to lessons in world religions, sex education, and such have voices too. They have equal opportunity to make those voices heard and get involved in influencing the educational agenda. If they don't get involved, they have to accept the consequences and they always have the option of expanding their children's knowledge at home.
In this specific case, the parents who were not only objecting to the assignment but also frothing at the mouth and screaming for the teacher to get fired are such ignoramuses, in my opinion. Yeah, this non-Muslim teacher who was using a standard assignment from a World Religions workbook and also taught comparative pieces from three other religions is trying to convert their children to Islam!
I like this video synopsis of the story.

I loved the exploding heads!
I like how that was presented! I particularly like how the outraged parents looked, it was perfect, it's how I see them in my mind's eye.

I think a lot of the outrage is due to the fact that in this country over the last several years there has been a mad dog frothing at the mouth attack on anything Christian in our schools, in courthouses, libraries and public spaces. The PC idiots have been on the anti religion campaign for some time. Now some teacher decides to assign an islamic message as part of their school work. Well it should be no surprise that people are pissed off.

Sometimes it seems like we are vastly outnumbered by people who have no common sense.

I'm not surprised that people are pissed off about this, sadly.
But, the fact is, people are free to pray, worship or otherwise individually respect their religions, Christian or Islam or any other, in all of the public places you mentioned.
It's simply not permissible for state/government run public spaces to advocate any religion -- in accordance with the Constitution.
The Supreme Court has already confirmed that students may be taught about religion, but public schools may not push or represent any one religion. As the U.S. Supreme Court indicated, "[i]t might well be said that one's education is not complete without a study of comparative religion, or the history of religion and its relationship to the advancement of civilization." It would be difficult to teach art, music, literature and most social studies without considering religious influences and vice versa.
Public schools can and do, for example, teach that some Christians believe in Creationism. But, they cannot teach that Creationism is responsible for mankind's presence. There's a big difference.
I think it's silly that heads exploded over this assignment. I'd think it equally silly if heads exploded when teachers explained that Christians believe that Jesus is the son of God and was born of immaculate conception, or that Christians live by the ten commandments, during a World Religions assignment. But, that's just me.

Al Jazeera is gone, I'm kinda surprised they didn't get a government bailout. It's a good thing though I believe it hopefully sends a message. But will probably get tons of bleeding heart slaps on the back.

We can still practice our religion on the Holidays....I always say Merry Christmas......I think some people think this is against the law....It is the old thing of separation of State and Religion........We can't do that, because then we have Jewish, Hindu, Muslim, atheists, etc. complaining about it.....so to prevent riots, wars, police action and on and on, there is separation....No Christmas trees, no nativity scenes, etc. in public buildings....If we are Christian, we can still celebrate Christmas. Why do some people think they don't have that right. Has everyone lost their dang minds? The very essence of this country is freedom of religion, but we can't stuff our views down the throats of everyone else......

DC Metro Police Officer Arrested for Supporting ISIS
Nicholas Young, 36, of Fairfax, Va., was arrested Wednesday morning at Metro Transit Police headquarters in Washington and his employment was terminated. Young sent codes for mobile messaging cards to an undercover federal agent in the belief that they would be used by Islamic State fighters overseas to communicate, according to an indictment filed in federal court in U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia.
Authorities, who had been surveilling Young for six years, said there was never any credible or specific threat to the Metro system. But the indictment details vague threats over the years to kill FBI agents and informants or bring guns into federal court. Young threatened to kidnap and torture an agent who interviewed him, according to the indictment, and leave the head of anyone who betrayed him in a cinder block at the bottom of a Virginia lake.
Young is the first U.S. police officer hit with terrorist charges. He first hit the radar due to his connections to two other Americans who'd converted to Islam to join terror groups. He is in court later today and faces 20 years in prison if convicted.

It's being reported that ISIS second in command, Abu Muhammad al-Adnani, has been killed. The circumstances of his death have not yet been confirmed. I hope they really did get the Godless savage.
