I hope this won't be another young Midwestern man found in the water.

Northwestern University Police and other law enforcement agencies have widened their search for missing Northwestern student Harsha Maddula to include the area of Wilmette Harbor on Lake Michigan....

An examination of Maddula's cellphone activity revealed the closest cellphone tower to the last signal received from his phone was in that area, according to Northwestern University officials.

The signal was received in the early morning hours of September 22, shortly after Maddula was last seen at an off-campus party....

Wilmette Harbor is approximately two miles north of Maddula's residence hall...

Searches have come up empty. Harsha was recently diagnosed with diabetes, so it's possible if his blood sugar fell too low, he would have been confused...but if that were the case, it seems like he would have been found by now.

The family of a missing pre-med student announced a $25,000 reward for tips leading to the 18-year-old who's been missing for five days.

Northwestern University sophomore Harsha Maddula was last seen leaving an off-campus party with friends early Saturday morning. Despite no indication of foul play, Maddula's father believes that his son was kidnapped, according to Fox News.

Maddula's parents and uncles flew into Evanston, Ill. from Long Island on Monday to join the search, which includes campus police and the FBI. On Wednesday, they announced the reward.

Fire departments and the Coast Guard searched a harbor on Lake Michigan, the area that recorded Maddula's last cellphone signal on Sept. 22.

His family shuddered when they learned divers looked underwater for him.

“It’s horrible,” his father, Prasad Maddula, told the Daily Northwestern yesterday. “I was so upset that they were checking in the lake. My hopes are gone.”

The cellphone signal bounced off a tower around 1 a.m., about an hour after he was last seen, WWLS reported.

(CBS/AP) EVANSTON, Ill. - The body of missing Northwestern University student Harsha Maddula was found in a harbor yesterday near the school's suburban Chicago campus, CBS Chicago reports.

The 18-year-old sophomore was pulled from Wilmette Harbor on Lake Michigan late Thursday. Northwestern spokesman Alan Cubbage said Maddula's wallet was found on the body.

Maddula was last seen leaving a party after midnight Saturday. A relative said he went to the party with several friends and disappeared after they left for another party.

Shortly before he disappeared, Maddula sent a text message saying he was returning to his dorm room, but Northwestern officials said there was no sign of the student on the dorm's security cameras or keycard logs.

No one had seen him since and his disappearance prompted a series of searches by police and volunteers. Maddula's family flew in from Long Island, N.Y. on Monday to join the search for the pre-med engineering student, who was recently diagnosed with diabetes.

"Obviously, a tragedy like this is something that affects the entire campus, and we had hoped for a different ending," Cubbage said.

Maddula's grief-stricken family was seen late Thursday night leaving an Evanston Hospital. They were taken to the hospital as a precaution, because Maddula's mother reportedly fainted when police notified them that her son had died.

Maddula's aunt, Dr. Surekha Madulla, said the family is grateful for the outpouring of support and the large number of volunteers who came forward to help.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's office will now conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of Maddula's death. Investigators said there were no signs of foul play on his body.

Very sad. Somehow I'm not surprised they found him in the water. I don't know what it is with all these Midwestern college students leaving parties and bars, and ending up dead in the water.
