SHOOTING ERUPTS AT MALL
#1

Sheriff's deputies say there has been a shooting in a shopping mall near Portland, Ore.

One witness at the Clackamas Town Center told television station KATU at least two people were shot, and he saw sheets put over them.

Another witness told the station she saw people screaming and parents grabbing their children as they fled the mall.

That witness said the gunman had a rifle and was wearing a camouflage outfit and a mask.

Another witness said ambulances were arriving at the scene.

Entrances to the mall have been blocked off.

No further details were immediately available from the Clackamas County sheriff's office.

At least one person is dead and several people are wounded this evening after a masked shooter opened fire at Clackamas Town Center, a mall in suburban Portland, Ore.

Police said the shooter had been "neutralized," but would not say whether the person was alive or dead.

"This is no longer an active shooter," Clackamas County Sheriff's Office spokesman Lt. James Rhodes said. "I believe the shooter has been neutralized and we are securing the mall, securing the scene and treating the wounded."

There was not an exact count of those killed or wounded, he said.

"We believe there's at least one deceased and maybe more," he said. "We know there are multiple wounded. Lifeline has landed to treat at least one of those wounded and we're set up to treat them as we find them as we search the mall."

Hundreds of people were evacuated from the busy mall full of holiday shoppers after the shooting began at around 3:30 p.m. PT.

Witnesses described seeing a gunman who looked like a teenager with a white hockey mask, wearing what was believed to be a black, bulletproof vest and carrying an assault rifle.

The person entered the mall through a Macy's store, ran through the upper level of Macy's and opened fire near the mall food court, firing multiple shots, one right after another, with what is believed to be a black, semiautomatic rifle, according to witness reports.

Witnesses described the shooter as being on a mission and determined, looking straight ahead.

Those interviewed said that Macy's shoppers and store employees huddled in a dressing room to avoid being found.

Evan Walters told ABC News Radio that he was locked in a store for his safety and he saw two people shot and heard multiple gunshots.

"It was over 20, and it was kind of surreal because we hear pops and loud noises," he said. "We're next to the food court here and we hear pops and loud noises all the time, but we don't -- nothing like that. It was very definite gunshots."

Jacob Tyler Roberts Identified As Clackamas Town Center Shooter
David Lohr The Huffington Post

Police have identified Jacob Tyler Roberts as the gunman who fatally shot two people at a crowded Oregon mall Tuesday before killing himself minutes later.

There is no known connection between Roberts, 22, and the Clackamas Town Center, police said Wednesday. Authorities have yet to identify a motive for the shooting and said they are still piecing together the suspect's actions leading up to it.

"At this time we do not understand the motive of this attack except to say there is no apparent relationship between the suspect and his victims," Clackamas County Sheriff Craig Roberts said at a press conference.

According to the sheriff, investigators have executed a search of the suspect's home at 7324 South East 84th Ave. in Portland and his 1996 VW Jetta that was found in the mall parking lot.

Police said they are not ready to release what, if anything, they found during either search.
At least part of the deadly encounter that rattled shoppers was captured on video surveillance inside the mall.

The gunman announced, "I am the shooter," and then opened fire on unsuspecting Christmas shoppers, witnesses at the Clackamas Town Center, which is just outside Portland, told police after the shooting.

The shooter was wearing a white hockey mask, and a load-bearing vest. He was also carrying a semi-automatic AR-15 rifle and several fully loaded magazines. The rifle was stolen from a person known to the suspect, police said.

Witnesses told police the gunman fired several shots at about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday near the mall food court before his rifle jammed and he ran into a nearby Macy's store.

Bill Cameron, a resident of Portland who was doing some holiday shopping at the mall, was on his way to the exit when he heard the gunshots echo through the hall behind him.
"I don't know exactly how many [shots were fired] but it was quite a few -- at least half a dozen or more. It was fairly rapid and I remember thinking whatever it was had to be something that could fire quickly," Cameron told The Huffington Post.
Investigators estimate the gunman fired his weapon at least 20 times.

According to Lt. James Rhodes, of the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office, three people were killed, including the shooter. The shooter died of a self-inflicted gunshot, Rhodes said.

One person, described as a 15-year-old girl, suffered a traumatic injury and is in serious condition at a Portland hospital.

On Wednesday morning, Yevgeniy Shevchenko posted a message to Facebook identifying the victim as his sister, Kristina Shevchenko.

"[Kristina] was shot at the Clackamas mall today around 3:30 pm. as of now she is stable and sleeping," the message reads. "The bullet went through, bruising her lung; it missed any vital organs and it missed her ribs. She will need 2 more operations. We appreciate any and all support including your prayers!"

Contacted by The Huffington Post, Yevgeniy Shevchenko said the family will not be giving any interviews to the media. "We would like some privacy. We are going to do periodical updates on [Facebook] but nothing too personal," he said.

The shooting victims have been identified as Cindy Ann Yuille, 54, and Steven Forsyth, 45.

My 19 year old daughter is attending Phagans Beauty at the Clackamas Town Center Mall. The building she was in is only about 75 feet from where the shooter entered Macy's.

She was in the back of the shop and did not hear the gun shots. Those students and customers in the front did hear the shots and ran to the back of the shop and secured themselves in a storage room. It was at this point that my daughter was able to reach me on her cell phone.

I live only about 3 miles away. I knew immediately something was wrong by the tone of her voice. At the time I received the call I didn't know anything about the shooting. I realized that it was only a matter of time before it would be impossible for me to get near the Center. I raced toward the mall wanting to get as close as I could so I would be near when she finally was able to get out.

At about 4:00pm SWAT officers led her and the others out and across the parking lot. They crossed the street to the Clackamas Promenade. By this time I was able to actually get to where she was with relative ease. I scooped her up and headed home.

Throughout my drive to get her there were literally dozens of police vehicle continuing to arrive on the scene. At one point we were in a line of cars waiting to turn away from the area and 9 cars, a van and a SWAT truck passed on the left. All with sirens and lights!

I'm so very grateful that she wasn't on a break. She usually would be at the Food Court if she had been.

Considering her experience, she has handled it very well. Not alot of sleep Tuesday nite, but naps yesterday to catch up.

RIP to the deceased. And a speedy recover to the wounded.

I'm glad no harm came to her. You must have been terrified on your drive to the mall.

Thank you Duchess.

My drive seemed to take forever although it was only about 15 minutes. I knew there would be no way I was going to get close enough to where she was to protect her. I figured, based on what she told me, that as long as they were in the back of the shop out of sight and with the doors locked, she was relatively safe.

The percentages were in her favor and I had to trust the LEOs to get things resolved quickly.

And I prayed.
