Compare these appalling casualty figures to the slightly over 1,000 U.S. Armed Service personnel and private contractors who were killed in Iraq and Afghanistan during the same period. Clearly we gun-toting Americans are our own worst enemies.

Only 1000 killed and I assume this number also includes IUDs correct?
And this in a country where Everyone has an automatic weapon, Several million people, nearly as many guns and only 1000 deaths.
Sounds like an armed society is a polite and safe society to me.

You kinda lost me, Six. I'm not pro or con stricter gun control. I see valid points on both sides and don't have a strong opinion one way or the other at this time.

The article says 1,000 US Armed Service killed in Iraq and Afghanistan as compared to over 31,000 killed by guns in the US during the same time. I think it's more applicable to take the suicides out of the equation, which would be about 11,000 killed at the hands of another in the US during the same period.

Also, the article says that less than 13 of households in the US own guns, not "Everyone". I suspect that many of those 13 households own more than one gun, but that's just a guess.

When vehicular deaths were brought up in this thread as a thinking point against stricter gun control, it reminded me of the article that I posted and how vehicular death comparisons had also been used to argue for stricter gun control. I see them as primarily unrelated issues, but it's helpful to have actual numbers and stats when making any comparisons, imo.

Anyway, the number of average annual deaths in the US caused by drunk drivers and the average annual deaths caused by gunshots (excluding suicides) are pretty close.

Ah, just got your point, Six.

I understand that you mean since Everyone (millions) in Iraq and Afghanistan has guns and only (not to minimize) 1,000 US Armed Service persons were killed there in 2008, then openly armed equates to a polite and safe society.

I can't draw the same conclusion from those sets of facts since the millions you cited is the total of the local populations of those countries, as compared to only around 150,000 US military persons stationed there. Plus, I don't view Afghanistan or Iraq as polite and safe societies. But, I do now see what you were intimating.

Do you think citizens should be able to carry arms equivalent to those that our military carry?

There were no automatic weapons involved here. Educate yourself, woman.

Smoking pot is illegal, yet that doesn't stop the many that puff away on a daily basis.

Child/spousal abuse is illegal, but that doesn't stop the people who routinely use their spouse & children as punching bags.

Hell, speeding is illegal, but that didn't stop me from doing 80 on the highway yesterday.

Do you honestly think that making more difficult to buy a gun from a store is going to stop another crackpot from shooting up a school/movie theater/mall? I sure the hell don't.

hah

I bet not.

Most of those casualties are from IEDs. They don't include the people who die after they are evacuated, only the dead-on-the-spot casualties. No telling how many people we have actually lost.

Segregation was the best form of gun control. Government run housing is a close second if we could keep the fat white women out of there.

I think the Mexicans are way worse. Why doesn't the world bitch about lopped off heads and people lynched on overpasses?

From 2011:
This is a historical list of countries by firearm-related death-rate per 100,000 population in one year.

Country/Homicides
El Salvador 50.36
Jamaica 47.44
Honduras 46.70
Guatemala 38.52
Swaziland 37.16
Colombia 28.11
Brazil 19.01
Panama 12.92
Mexico 11.14
Philippines 9.46
South Africa 9.41
United States 9.00

Notice anything?

Yes, black people, I know you go on and on about how crazy white people do stuff like this and black people rarely commit mass murders.

I do agree that crazy white people are indeed crazy. A lot of black folks are fucking crazy, too. Homies don't commit as many mass murders (we'll forget about drive-bys for now and pretend you people don't do that shit) because after they shoot the first few people they get distracted and start looking around for stuff to steal. Plus, black people don't seem to think it's a big deal to kill one or two people at a time. White people just get shit done quicker and don't make ten minutes work drag out over several years.

Mexicans do way more mass murders, but they tend to shy away from killing a bunch of white people. I think because they have short little legs and can't run fast/far and can't drive a get-away car worth a shit this far from the border.

If your own child shoots you, you probably fucked up somewhere along the way. If they shoot a bunch of kids, you most cetainly did something wrong. I'm not going to accept any responsiblity for the fucked up stuff other people do. Y'all can blame yourselves or blame the government or blame society if you want, but that's fucking stupid.

I wouldn't even consider blaming myself for what another person does. I have no problem owning my own bullshit but I draw the line at accepting responsibility for the choices of others. Fuck that.

This is the kind of thing that touches my heart, not the gruesome deaths of individuals who don't deserve the air they breathe.

Love it, and it is total common sense; nice to see that back here! ! !

Very touching, though I felt bad and good that the pup got taken away. I also admire the political spin that got put on it.

This also touched my heart...LOL

No, I don't really think so. I don't see any real need for private citizens to own an M60 Machine gun or any of the other full rock n roll toys that the military has. Doesn't mean I wouldn't like to own one, that would be cool, but for me it would be a wall hanger, I wouldn't want to pay to feed the thing.
What the media and anti gun folks scare folks with are what is called "Asault Rifles" and the picture they show with that definition is a full combat AK47 or M16 of FN FAL loaded up with goodies like large capacity magazines, night scoped, tac lites and the like.
The AK47 has garnered the image as one of the most evil looking weapons out there, so usually thats what gets posted up.
Reality on the street is most people own an AR15 which is a semi auto M16, or an AK knock off in semi auto, those only fire 1 bullet every time you pull the trigger.
Point is, you don't need a high capacity weapon to do a huge amount of dammage, 1 guy with a wheel bun and 4 extra speed loaders could have made the same body count. I can shoot that good and I know a Lot of other people that can too. Hell, you lock yourself in a room with 20 kindergardners and have a baseball bat you can get there.
So, no we don't need military quality weapons, doesn't mean I can't own one that looks military, looks don't kill people, crazy motherfuckers with guns do.

Some people are born evil or fucked up and no matter how much love and guidance their parents give then, there is no fixing them.

This guy would have found a way to hurt people if he didn't have guns.

Weird as fuck. Like people can't click on shit if they want to read it.

I just don't understand.

Related gun control discussion was also coming up in the Connecticut Shooting thread.

Just looking to consolidate in one place for serious gun control discussion (outside of the mock Onion piece and We Don't Give a Fuck section), but anyone can post wherever they'd like, of course. If a thread isn't on top, people may not know it exists - thus the link for those interested in continuing the parallel discussions going on in two threads.

Not weird at all, really.

WTF?

Fucking weird behavior. Duchess can move shit if she wants it moved. If people want to post in another thread they will.

"people may not know it exists" = fishing for attention for your thread

I refuse to discuss gun control with a bunch of strangetards, especially in the above-spammed thread just on principle.

I just wouldn't explain it any longer. It isn't helping. It is just making you appear to be a control freak who needs other people to validate her thread. I think your thread is shit. Unless you are my elected representative, it is a total waste to share my opinion with you. And I don't care what y'all think. I'm grown, so I can probably guess: The hunters and gun nuts will not be in favor of gun control. The stupid cows will because they don't stop and think about all the weapons already out there. The libs will blame society for some nutfuck instead the mother who had a fucked up kid and at least five guns in her home.

Y'all should be more concerned with his computer room. THAT is the issue you share. Start spending too much time craving validaiton from strangers and something is bound to snap...
