A shooting broke out in New Orleans on Monday moments after a parade celebrating Martin Luther King Day passed through the Central City neighborhood, the Times-Picayune reports.

The gun violence occurred shortly after 1 p.m. -- about 30 minutes after the parade -- at the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and LaSalle Street, according to WWLTV.

Five people suffered non-fatal injuries in the incident, according to reports. Authorities do not believe the violence was related to the parade.

Police spokeswoman Remi Braden said that the victims are all 17 or 18 years old. She said that a white car drove up to the victims as a passenger fired a weapon from the vehicle's sunroof, according to the Associated Press.

"It's the state of affairs in our nation that young men do not heed the words of Martin Luther King Jr.," NOPD Superintendent Ronal Serpas said of the incident, according to the Times-Picayune.

Police expect to release surveillance footage of the incident.

This sadly, rings true..........
