I don't know any of the background to this story, I just heard a very brief news clip last night and it was about this deposition, I was kinda surprised to hear that she had to answer questions pertaining to racism under oath. Yeah, it's a bad word but to have to say whether you've used it or not under oath I thought was over the top and my first thought was who gives a fuck and apparently quite a few people do. I think it's dumb.

I haven't been following the story closely either; only read a couple of blurbs about it.

Deen had to answer those questions in deposition because she is being sued for employment discrimination. Somebody leaked the transcripts of her testimony to the media.

If this bites Deen in the ass too badly, maybe her friend Oprah will have her on her show to do the standard celebrity confessional and public apology. Or, maybe not... Smiley_emoticons_wink

I'm the one that would like to have a couple of slaves so I guess I'm not very understanding when it comes to this type of thing. At the end of the day Paula Deen will be laughing all the way to the bank.

I bet a lot of people don't care or will just forget it.

For those who are offended, Deen is apologizing and asking for forgiveness.

She released this video today.

Sumbitch! I think less of her for doing that.

She should have said. "I would never use the word nigger, thats a bad word nigger. It should not be said in public and I am not racist towards niggers, I just lived in a time that niggers were not offended by being called a nigger , hell everyone said nigger back then, but i promise never to use the word nigger again, nope my mouth is closed never say nigger again no niggers nope, will never say nigger again.
That would have generated her some money if she did it in a funny way.
He ain't heavy, he's my brother.

Is it even possible to think less of Paula Deen, even before she said 'nigger'?

I don't approve of her recipe ingredients but I like her nonetheless, I think she's funny.

I'm slightly bugged she issued an apology. I don't think it was necessary...and now I'm thinking about the "word police". I think she's sorta/kinda being persecuted for using a word. I didn't think it was that big of a deal but it's all over the place today.

She should have never made that stupid apology. I think less of her now too. I'll still continue to make her tomato pie however, fucking awesome.

I wouldn't have apologized, that was never going to work. It just showed weakness, now she is done

I think that apology was the worst thing she could have done in this situation.

Lawyer: Have you ever used the N-word yourself?
Deen: Yes, of course.

Lawyer: Okay. In what context?
Deen: Well, it was probably when a black man burst into the bank that I was working at and put a gun to my head.

Lawyer: Okay. And what did you say?
Deen: Well, I don't remember, but the gun was dancing all around my temple ... I didn't -- I didn't feel real favorable towards him.

Lawyer: Okay. Well, did you use the N-word to him as he pointed a gun in your head at your face?
Deen: Absolutely not.

Lawyer: Well, then, when did you use it?
Deen: Probably in telling my husband.

Lawyer: Okay. Have you used it since then?
Deen: I'm sure I have, but it's been a very long time.

Lawyer: Can you remember the context in which you have used the N-word?
Deen: No.

Lawyer: Has it occurred with sufficient frequency that you cannot recall all of the various context in which you've used it?
Deen: No, no.

Lawyer: Well, then tell me the other context in which you've used the N-word?
Deen: I don't know, maybe in repeating something that was said to me.

Lawyer: Like a joke?
Deen: No, probably a conversation between blacks. I don't -- I don't know. But that's just not a word that we use as time has gone on. Things have changed since the '60s in the south. And my children and my brother object to that word being used in any cruel or mean behavior. As well as I do.

Lawyer: What about jokes, if somebody is telling a joke that's got --
Deen: It's just what they are, they're jokes.

Lawyer: Okay. Would you consider those to be using the N word in a mean way?
Deen: That's -- that's kind of hard. Most -- most jokes are about Jewish people, rednecks, black folks. Most jokes target -- I don't know. I didn't make up
the jokes, I don't know. I can't -- I don't know.

Lawyer: Okay.
Deen: They usually target, though a group. Gays or straights, black, redneck, you know, I just don't know. I can't, myself, determine what offends another person.

Lawyer: Do you recall using the words “really southern plantation wedding”?
Deen: Yes, I did say I would love for Bubba to experience a very southern style wedding, and we did that. We did that.

Lawyer: Okay. You would love for him to experience a southern style plantation wedding?
Deen: Yes.

Lawyer: That’s what you said?
Deen: Well, something like that, yes. And -–

Laywer: Okay. And is that when you went on to describe the experience you had at the restaurant in question?
Deen: Well, I don’t know. We were probably talking about the food or –- we would have been talking about something to do with service at the wedding,

Lawyer: Is there any possibility, in your mind, that you slipped and used the word “n----r”?
Deen: No, because that’s not what these men were. They were professional black men doing a fabulous job.

Lawyer: Why did that make it a -– if you would have had servers like that, why would that have made it a really southern plantation wedding?
Deen: Well, it –- to me, of course I’m old but I ain’t that old, I didn’t live back in those days but I’ve seen the pictures, and the pictures that I’ve seen, that restaurant represented a certain era in America.

Lawyer: Okay.
Deen: And I was in the south when I went to this restaurant. It was located in the south.

Lawyer: Okay. What era in America are you referring to?
Deen: Well, I don’t know. After the Civil War, during the Civil War, before the Civil War.

Lawyer: Right. Back in an era where there were middle-aged black men waiting on white people.
Deen: Well, it was not only black men, it was black women.

Lawyer: Sure. And before the Civil War –- before the Civil War, those black men and women who were waiting on white people were slaves, right?
Deen: Yes, I would say that they were slaves.

Lawyer: Okay.
Deen: But I did not mean anything derogatory by saying that I loved their look and their professionalism.

Much ado about nothing. I honestly don't know why it's such a big friggin' deal. Nigger. Nigger. Nigger. It's no worse than calling a gay a fag. Fag. Fag. Fag.

Goddamn word police should be blown off the face of the earth.

Duchess. I agree.

I think she was put on a hot seat and questions were fired at her without the benefit of a legal advisor (so it would seem from the transcript and her answers)

Sometimes I get so disgusted at what is happening to our country. I truly don't think that using inappropriate words is sufficient reason to go off the rails.

Smiley_emoticons_smile Haven't watched Saturday Night Live in a long time. Might tune in tonight to see if they manage some such spoof of the deposition and apology video.

I think Paula Deen's PR team really messed this whole thing up. Well, Paula messed up with her demeanor and wording in her deposition answers, but the PR response was awful. JMO.

I read that the final decision to can her wasn't made by the Food Network until after the apology videos and immediate public reaction to them. She shoulda just gone on The Today Show as scheduled that morning rather than releasing those crazy videos. Staying silent wouldn't have worked, but those videos were really ill-conceived.

She's still got a ton of dough, her merchandise line and restaurants though. She won't be hurting for cash, but I wouldn't be surprised if a bunch of other ex-employees now see an opportunity to sue her too and jump on it. Bubba's her albatross, imo.

If she pulls her shit together and gets better PR advisers (and listens to them), she doesn't have to be down for the count. It's possible that a temporary cool-down hiatus and redemption/re-emergence strategy could work.

People who predicted Martha Stewart's fade into obscurity after that pesky little insider trading incarceration predicted wrongly. Martha's one smart bitch though. I don't know about Paula.
