What amazes me, is that this woman has managed to stir up so much hate. The comment section of WMUR is hilarious. People are so offended by the word nigger, that they want to hang Copeland on the highest tree.

Makes perfect sense to me that people would promote tolerance by using violence.

Wolfeboro Police Commissioner Robert Copeland, who recently acknowledged using a racial slur while talking about President Barack Obama, has resigned, according to WMUR and the Washington Post.

Copeland had previously refused to apologize or resign over the comments, which were overheard by a resident of the New Hampshire town and acknowledged by Copeland in an email to his fellow police commissioners.

"I believe I did use the 'N' word in reference to the current occupant of the Whitehouse," Copeland's email said, according to the AP. "For this, I do not apologize — he meets and exceeds my criteria for such."

Political leaders and residents of Wolfeboro had called on Copeland to resign. Former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney also spoke out against "the vile epithet."

“He should apologize and resign," Romney said in a statement.

I don't like the word "nigger" in any context, no matter how it's spelled, and don't use it myself -- I know that I could, I just don't think it and have no motivation to use it.

But, that doesn't mean I think that another person shouldn't be able to use it if that's how he feels, just like those who hear it should be free to judge him (or not), depending on how they feel about the word and the context.

Anyway, in this case, I think it says as much or more about someone who runs and tattles to the media about something they overheard in a small town conversation as it does about the person on whom they're tattling. Don't know why the woman who made it a news story didn't take it up with the commissioner directly.

Too bad this Jane lady didn't try to meet personally with the commissioner after she got his initial letter indicating that he stood by his comment, if she felt personally offended.

Don't know if this is a case of the commissioner feeling like less is more in terms of making a statement, or he just didn't have any more to say about it.

I know what I've read & heard but how can I take their serious thoughts seriously when it's okay for them to use it but no one else is supposed to. I don't think it means the same thing to everybody, within or across races.

Maybe I don't understand all the details of this story, but based on what I've read here, Jane just moved to the small town and overheard a town official use the word "nigger" to describe the President during a conversation at a restaurant.

She doesn't like it and feels offended -- okay, her right. So, she complains to the town council and gets a letter from the official saying that Mr. Obama meets his criteria of "nigger" so he's not gonna apologize.

It's a small town -- why not set up an appointment and talk to him personally if she really felt so personally offended -- hear what he had to say and go from there? Maybe she tried that before pushing it further and I just don't know about it. Or, maybe she didn't care to understand his perspective and was bent on getting her time in the sun, as crash suggested. IDK.
