Nigger is a derogatory word for a black person, it's derived from the word negro and can't be applied to anyone other than a black person. The same way you wouldn't call anyone a chink or spic other than a Chinese or Mexican person for example. Black people adapted it as a word only they can use amongst each other, otherwise it holds the same derogatory context as always.

So if you're not a black person then the appropriate time to use the word nigger is when that black person is behaving like a fucking dick head and there is no better word to call them.

Apparently one student found that offensive, cried to the principal, and Pierce was put on leave. Jesus Christ. She wasn't advocating the use of the word, she was just using it as an example of words that can offend groups of people.

Not everyone agrees with the offended student and the principal though. Juslena Williams, a 2011 graduate of Heritage High, launched a petition on GoPetition.com calling on the school to reinstate Ms Pierce.

‘Ms. Pierce did nothing wrong. She is a history teacher, she cannot be censored for teaching terms and beliefs that people had throughout history,’ Ms Williams, who is black, wrote in her plea. She said Ms. Pierce was one of the best teachers around.

Upon the completion of the internal investigation, administrators will determine if Pierce will face disciplinary action or be allowed to return to work.

I hope this teacher is allowed to return to her job. In the meantime, her students are being taught by different substitutes and said to be falling behind. Context matters -- if Pierce had called one of her students a nigger, it would be a problem. But, that's not what she did and I think it's bullshit that she was placed on leave at all, given the context of her remark.

Why isn't it comparable? They're both derogatory terms. Same as "Redskin" but you don't hear people calling that the "R" word.

I think the more people "take offense", the more they're screaming "I'm a victim, I'm a victim" and identifying with the subjugation (slavery) that their ancestors faced. Which allows for all kinds of excuses as to why they're helpless and hopeless when, in fact, that's largely wrong thinking.

Being called "gay" used to be an insult too but most gay people I know wouldn't bitch slap you for that--they'd probably say "so"?

We enslaved the Indians, MS. We imprisoned the slanty eyes during the war. Still, no word evokes the same emotion (nor the need to abbreviate it to "N") as nigger.

I personally don't feel an ounce of guilt for what happened to black people before my time. Nigger was short for niger/negro which simply meant "black". That was offensive so then it became colored people, THAT was offensive so then it became blacks, then African American and the last I heard, the "African" part is unnecessary (and oftentimes incorrect) and perhaps we should all just call each other Americans.
