Have you ever been asked what your zip code is after making a purchase with your credit card?

Good! I hope the others reading this don't divulge theirs either. I've done it in the past. Smiley_emoticons_slash

My Dr. called in my Epi-Pen prescription and the pharmacy asked for my social security number when I picked it up, that's not the first time a drugstore has attempted that bs with me.

Zip code I do but never my SS. We had to ask people for their SS on ever file. 9 times out of 10 they gave it with no question. I thought more people would question it.

What do they do with the zip code?? I think the only place I've done this is the gas pump but I thought it was for verification purposes, since clearly there isn't someone there checking your ID.

National Retail Federation says it's done to better know their customers but Privacy Rights Clearinghouse Policy and Advocacy advises against offering it, merchants cannot legally require that of you, the only exception to that is at the gas pumps.

It should be noted this practice is how you come to get junk mail as well.

Junk mail goes right from the box into the recycle can. Never even enters the house.

I had always thought inputting it at the gas pump was to prevent fraud...as you are asked for zipcode of billing address. I have no issues with it. I get very little junk mail, and have not seen any increases.

That is why they ask at the pump.

Hmm I'll definitely remember that the next time I'm asked. I'm willing to bet the cashier will be surprised when I decline to give it. I'm thinking most people just think it's normal practice and required.

I take credit cards on a virtual terminal and it allows me to bypass the fraud screening so I don't have to ask for the billing address. It's not something that's required to batch out the credit card, you don't even need the person's name. Just the card # and expiration.

It bothers me more giving out the 3 digit code on the back of my cc. I do it all the time ordering online or by phone but that's everything someone needs to use your cc.

What steps are you willing to take to make that bothersome feeling disappear?

Don't tell me; tell hubby.

It's his money and he should be willing to make those bad feelings vanish and protect his credit rating.

You don't need the three digit code either if you select fraud bypass on the terminal. I only enter the card #, expiration and $ amount and it goes right through.
