The Straub's are a nurse and truck driver. They were aware of their daughters problems. It is just well known that all the kids from Johnny's circle were talking about the non existing safe with a $100,000 in it. I don't know why he would make that up. For some reason he just felt compelled to brag about his living there, and embellished it.
If it's true he bragged about a non-existent safe, that's really, really, really sad
Sad, but he could have been thinking it would help him professionally, as in selling. If you have access to some serious cash, you are taken more seriously as a buyer. He could've been bragging in order to bump up business, if you know what I mean.
