I have a friend since, well make that two friends since my single digit age and both of them I've had some out and out battles with and we're still friends to this day. We know each other so well that we don't let much get in our way.
I think also that because we actually KNOW how to argue instead of throwing everything in plus the kitchen sink and staying on topic, it helps.
I've also been on the other side of it many times where those who I thought had a reasonable mind were too emotionally retarded to even have a rational discussion.

There's a guy at work who loves to debate religion.
He knows I used to be a Mormon and am now an atheist.
He's still an active Mormon.
At first our discussions would turn slightly heated but we both figured out that was going to get us nowhere and it was either learn to not argue our points or simply walk away and not talk about the subject at all.
Now it just never gets to the point of getting heated and I've picked up a couple of ideas from him. Perhaps he has too. Either way, we enjoy the differences of opinion and don't let those exact differences distract us.

I can and have had plenty of heated out and out fights with friends and then brushed it off like nothing happened.
It's sort of healthy. What I won't continue a friendship over is bullshit like someone saying they're mad at me but won't say anything other than "you know what you did" as if by magic I'm going to make things right or know what offended them.
My ex wife used to do that shit all the time. The worst with her was when she would finally come around and then tell me what offense I made only to find out she either misheard me or got it from heresay. That there is a clear case of juvenile emotions.

One thing that pisses me off to no end is when you have a group of friends, and say, 2 of them have gotten into an argument, and the friendship is pretty much over. Then your caught ( for lak of a better word) talking to one of them, and then the other one will be pissed off at you for no other reason than you're talking to someone they now hate.
Fuck that shit. If I wasn't personally involved, leave me the fuck out of it and never tell me who I can or can't be friends with. More than likely, it will end more friend ships in the long run.
That's when I usually say fuck you to all of them and be done with it. I've only had to deal with this once in my life and have made sure to not get into those kind of clicks again. Who needs the fucking stress?

I don't have any friends to argue with. I fight with the boyfriend a lot, but I can't stay mad @ anyone I love for more than a few minutes. I am just happy go lucky like that.
