The body of the child found charred in DiMaggio's home has now been formally identified as 8 year old Ethan Anderson.

News reports today indicate that DiMaggio was planning to move to Texas and invited the whole family over to say goodbye. That's when he ambushed them.

Really hope this guy gets taken down today and Hannah is recovered unharmed; such an evil POS.

Close friend of accused California kidnapper, murderer shares insights
August 9, 2013 @ 4:42 pm (Updated: 5:24 pm - 8/9/13 )

A good friend of the man believed to have kidnapped a California teen girl and killed her mother says those close to Jim DiMaggio are as confused and desperate for answers as everyone else.
Andrew Spanswick offered his insights during an extended conversation Friday with KIRO Radio's Dori Monson. He says he first learned of the fire that destroyed the family home near San Diego - where 16-year-old Hannah Anderson's mother was later found dead - while traveling in Washington state. He got a call from a close friend who's married to DiMaggio's sister.

"We were confused. He's not a smoker and so we couldn't figure out how he could have burned to death in his house," Spanswick says. "We just assumed that Jim had actually died and that went on for two days. And then we find out there was an unidentified woman in the house. So this whole thing became stranger and stranger and more and more confusing for his family members."

Spanswick, a mental health specialist who operates a number of psychiatric and substance abuse facilities, says while he hadn't seen DiMaggio for several months there was little indication anything was out of the ordinary before the disappearance. However, he had reportedly begun smoking marijuana several months ago, which was out of character for him.

"Obviously it doesn't look good. Something's obviously happened. There's a long history of substance abuse in the family and so we're concerned there might be some drug-induced psychosis that might have tripped Jim up," he says.

DiMaggio was close to the family. The children's father has described him as a best friend and said his children thought of him as an uncle. But even though there had been no indication anything was out of the ordinary as DiMaggio prepared to move to Texas for a new job, Spanswick admits he can't rule anything out.

"I've seen people have psychotic breaks and do all sorts of strange things, so I'm a little jaded. And nothing would surprise me in terms of what the human being is capable of with mental illness," he says.

"I have to, as a clinician, step back from my personal relationship and say that yes anybody can potentially be capable of heinous acts. The question is what induced it, why did it happen and did that really happen? We still don't really know."

What Spanswick does know is despite all the speculation, there are no definitive answers. For example, he cites reports that DiMaggio had an "unusual infatuation" with the teen girl and had said he would date her if they were closer to the same age. A friend of Anderson's reportedly told authorities the girl was "creeped out" and didn't want to be alone with him.

DiMaggio's car was discovered Friday in the Idaho wilderness after horseback riders reported seeing the man and girl hiking in the area two days earlier.

San Diego County Sheriff Bill Gore said at a news conference Friday when the riders saw the two, the girl did not appear as if she was being held against her will. He did not elaborate. She and DiMaggio seemed healthy.

But Spanswick says the girl might not even know anything out of the ordinary happened and simply thinks she's on a camping trip with "Uncle Jim," or could have willingly gone with him.

"This could be statutory rape, this might not be pedophilia as everybody is sort of out there pronouncing out in the media. And if it's statutory rape and there's manipulation involved with the girl that's a different situation," he says.

According to Spanswick, DiMaggio was a military veteran who did classified work he kept secret from family and friends. "There's a possibility he's very good at covering things up," he says.

Spanswick has been providing counsel and comfort to DiMaggio's family, especially his sister. He says they are devastated and praying the pair are brought home safely, along with answers to what really happened.

Thanks, user. Incredibly good news!

Limited details being released at this time:

Teams of federal SWAT officers and trackers were flown into a 300-square-mile wilderness area of Idaho Saturday, expanding the massive hunt for missing teen Hannah Anderson and DiMaggio.

DiMaggio was shot and killed during an arrest attempt at the north end of Morehead Lake, Gore said. He said the fugitive was killed after his campsite was spotted from the air.

He declined to give any other details about the confrontation.

Gore said he hopes that Hannah can be reunited Sunday with her father, Brett Anderson, who has been holding out hope all week for her safe return.

Hannah will be taken Saturday night "to a hospital where she's going to be thoroughly evaluated," Gore said.

FBI Special Agent Jason Pack said Saturday, before DiMaggio was shot and killed, that there were about 200 federal, state and local authorities in Cascade, Idaho, about 75 miles north of Boise, to search for DiMaggio and Hannah.

Hannah's being evaluated at a hospital in Boise and will be reunited with her dad today.

Dad was apparently recently separated from mom and living out of state; IDK how long it's been since Mr. Anderson has seen his daughter, but he is said to be understandably "elated".

I'm curious to hear from Hannah just WTF went down that night at DiMaggio's home and during the week that followed.

Me too! I have to think the police have talked to her about that by now. What do you think the chances are of them sharing that with the media?

Since there's not likely any prosecution/court case to worry about, I think the chances are good that they'll share it (and other evidence) quickly if Hannah was taken off guard by what went down at DiMaggio's house that night and physically forced/threatened to get in his car and behave normally.

If he was instead head-gaming her for some time and convinced her that it was their destiny to be together and she bought into it (but had no hand in the killings), I don't think police will release those details right away. Police know the kid isn't responsible for what the adult did, but they might fear public backlash against someone who's already been significantly victimized.

Just found out Hannah had a cat along with her on the camping trip, how crazy can you get? this was not a family campground where some people bring their house cat with them to the RV. Poor Hannah, poor cat what a freak he was, thank god she is safe and sound & the cat!

BOISE — Hannah Anderson has been reunited with her cat.

The 16-year-old brought her gray cat with her to the Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness after being kidnapped from her Southern California home by James Lee DiMaggio.

Former Gem County Sheriff Mark John, who along with his wife Christa and ranchers Mike and Mary Young, encountered Hanna and DiMaggio in the wilderness near Morehead Lake on Wednesday, thought it was strange to see a house cat in the rugged Idaho backwoods east of Cascade.

Hannah was holding the cat when the foursome encountered her.

"The only reason you bring a cat out there is to attract a mountain lion or a bear," John said.

The cat's presence could have made the feline as well as DiMaggio and Hannah prey for any of a number of wild animals found in central Idaho.

The cat, whose name wasn't immediately available this morning, was brought to Hannah following her rescue Saturday.

If she was abducted against her will (I think she was), I can imagine what a huge, HUGE comfort having that cat was to her.

Definitely a blessing that Hannah wasn't aware her mom and brother had been killed while she was being held captive by DiMaggio.

Authorities confirmed today that Hannah was physically unharmed, but I didn't see it specifically mentioned as to whether Hannah was sexually abused by DiMaggio. If she was, not sure that detail will be released by authorities unless Hannah wants to disclose it publicly.

Anyway, glad she's been safely reunited with her dad and that authorities are committed to assisting her in dealing with her losses and trauma.

Here's a recap of confirmations and new details released by the San Diego Sheriff (Bill Gore) today:

-Hannah Anderson was not aware that her mother and brother had been killed as she was driven across several states and into the Idaho wilderness.

-Hanna was being held "under duress" by James Lee DiMaggio. Gore's comments are the first definitive indication that Hannah Anderson did not accompany DiMaggio willingly.

-The Sheriff's department's focus now is on trying to get Hannah all the resources, the help she needs to get through this extremely traumatic ordeal she’s been through.

-DiMaggio fired at least one shot at authorities before he was fatally wounded by an FBI agent.

-DiMaggio was armed with at least one weapon that he was carrying in a shoulder holster, Gore said.

-Hannah Anderson was physically unharmed.

Like father, like son...

Back in 1988, DiMaggio's dad reportedly professed his love for the 16 year old daughter of his ex-girlfriend and threatened to kill her, her boyfriend and her brother if she wouldn't go away with him.

The older DiMaggio was arrested when he broke into the house and held the girl and her boyfriend at gunpoint (the girl escaped; no one was hurt).

The older DiMaggio committed suicide 15 years ago on August 10th, the same date that his son took down the Andersons and ran off with Hannah.

Weird.

It's being reported that these are Hannah's words. LE will neither confirm nor deny -

Hannah Anderson has spoken out about her ordeal and released pictures of herself over social media websites - fielding hundreds of questions from supporters and detailing her kidnapping by neighbor James DiMaggio.

Social media accounts belonging to the 16-year-old California girl have been updated with multiple photographs and lengthy posts talking about the kidnapping, the six-day manhunt that ensued and how she feels guilty about her mother and brother's death.

'He tricked us,' one post on her Ask.fm account said. She explained that DiMaggio told the Andersons to come over and ride go carts on his property. Once they arrived, he tied up her mother and brother and fled by car with Hannah.

'I will never forgive myself for not trying harder to save them,' another post read.

She reportedly wrote that DiMaggio had rigged the home with explosives so that the fatal fire that killed her mother, brother and dog did not start until after she and DiMaggio were well on their way to Idaho, where they were eventually spotted by horseback riders.

The post-kidnapping responses came mostly on Ask.fm, a social media site popular among teenagers where they pose questions to one another and answer back.

One user asked why she did not try to run.

'He had a gun and threatened to kill me and anyone who tried to help,' she wrote.

In addition to writing specific details about the case, Hannah's social media presence has given a glimpse into her life following her release.

She reportedly got a manicure on Monday and visited her grandmother. On Tuesday, she was reunited with her beloved cat.

ASKED AND ANSWERED: A SELECTION OF THE QUESTIONS HANNAH ANDERSON HAS RESPONDED TO SINCE HER KIDNAPPING
