That's before the fire, so I can't imagine how miserable it must be now. :(

I can & it's precisely why I'm not reading about it, I form mental pictures of the devastation.

I've read that they are not as friendly as they look, so they must be really suffering to go up topeople :( I know that wildfires are also part of nature, but it's still heartbreaking to look at the pictures and it pisses me off that someone did it deliberately.

That was my first thought, too.

Fire Survivor 'Sam' the Koala Dies in Surgery

Feb. 11: Sam the koala is treated at the Mountain Ash Wildlife Center in Rawson, Australia.

ADELAIDE, Australia⿿ Sam the koala, who gained worldwide fame and sympathy when she was rescued during Australia's devastating wildfires this year, died Thursday during an operation meant to save her from a life-threatening disease.[/b]

The 4-year-old koala had developed cysts associated with urogenital chlamydiosis, which affects up to 50 percent of Australia's koala population.

During surgery, the disease was found to be so advanced that it was inoperable and Sam was put to sleep, said Peita Elkhorne, spokeswoman for the lawyers that represent the shelter where the koala had lived since the February fires.

"It was so severe that there was no possible way to be able to manage her pain," Elkhorne said in a statement. "All of those who have been involved with Sam are devastated with this loss."

Even Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd commented on the animal's death, saying she had been a symbol of hope for Australia during the wildfires.

"It's tragic that Sam the koala is no longer with us," Rudd said.

As the fires burned in Victoria state, Sam was gingerly making her way on scorched paws past a fire patrol north of Melbourne when one of the firefighters spotted her. The firefighter was photographed holding a bottle of water to her lips, an image that resonated around the world.

She suffered second- and third-degree burns to her paws and had been recuperating at the Southern Ash Wildlife Shelter.

Record temperatures, high winds and forests dried by years of drought set off infernos that swept a vast area of Victoria state, killing more than 170 people and destroying thousands of homes.

I can honestly say, from the bottom of my heart, I couldn't give a fuck.

certainly far more compassion over in the outback for these furry-fellows than for the aborigines whom were treated far worse than being burned out.

what the fuck, they were only savages anyway.

Yeah.. the genocide comiited towards the Indigenous people in Australia by the British settlers some 220 odd years ago is comparable to the almost annihilation of Native Americans....

then when the country started to get bored with the British, and started shaping it's own identity, it went and modelled it off the US and continued to treat them like shit.... Putting them on reservations, refusing them the right to vote and pretty much making them work like slaves; little pay and shit conditions.

Thank fuck in the new age the people of Australia have realised they don't need someone else's identity or ideals

Well, I guess I'm an idiot because this story made me break down in tears and I'm still getting weepy about it. Poor little thing survives hell on earth and then succumbs to an agonizing disease. I don't care what kind of animal it is, that's just fucking tragic.

I guess that might be part of it, but it's heartbreaking when someone or something overcomes nearly insurmountable obstacles and then dies soon after of something completely unrelated. Fucking god.

Actually, not to be a smart ass, there was a crocodile by the name of Elvis that lived at a place called the Australian Reptile Park. There was a fire that went through there something like five years ago and Elvis ended up dying. There was widespread media coverage of that and the ended up burying it on the site and people still go there to see Elvis's grave...

As for the Funnel Webs, you can whack as many of those fuckers you like without too many people giving a shit about it
