the 2024 trivial, boring drivel thread

Pilot error.

Racist bridge . . . named after the author of our national anthem.

It didn't collapse . . . it knelt.

New name suggestion:  the Lift Every Voice bridge.

Are you on a news break? That info is easily found in every news/media outlet reporting on this. In fact you don't even have to click on any of them, just type in a search into google.

He went on to say that those on board issued a mayday call to emergency officials onshore and traffic onto the bridge was able to be restricted. There are people missing. I don't to negate how truly awful that is, but it could have been so much worse as to the number of vehicles on the bridge.

Exactly.

So strange-hadn't it just left port?

Yes, it did, the Port of Baltimore.

I read that some of the missing are the crew who were working the overnight hours fixing potholes on the bridge.

Very sad. Good thing it wasn't during a higher traffic time, it would have been way worse.

I had no idea there was a port that size in Maryland. I mean I have no knowledge of anything on the east coast. I look at this picture and think, "What are we exporting? What is all this stuff?"

It's a management company. International vessels are required to have two independent sources of power, both of which must be capable of maintaining seaworthiness. The video shows the power going off, coming back on, then going off again. Both power sources appear to have failed, which makes me wonder about when the ship last had a thorough inspection of it's critical systems.

The stern of the ship appears to swing wildly to the right prior to the collapse, so it must have struck the support column with the starboard side of it's bow. The column didn't immediately give out. Looks to my eye like the ship was well off course prior to losing power.

I read that the swinging was due to the drop of the anchor.

From the backup generator coming online or engine trouble, is what I've heard.

Whatever went wrong, I'm convinced it started before the power went out.

Be interesting to know if the navigation systems utilize AI.

The worst part are the dust mites that feed on the dead skin.
