Update:

Bernie's taken over the apartment! He and my older cat are still on hissing terms but it's a LOT better than it was.

Thanks to Ant for her suggestions, I managed to grab him shortly after she posted her advice, stuck him in the bathroom/walk-in closet and he got over his fear fast. I'm still confining him to the bathroom while I sleep to prevent a cat fight breaking out on my face during the night. Hopefully they'll get used to each other, if not make friends.

That's great news! I'm glad he's starting to settle in. Keep the patience, they may never be best buddies but at least over time they'll tolerate each other where they don't fight.

This adjusting process can take a few months, so don't give up!
