Help me understand Patty Hearst, Paris Hilton, Susan Smith or Jeffrey Dahmer.

What specifically fucked them up?

Beatings or breast feeding?
I never said that every fucked up adult is a result of a fucked up childhood. It also doens't take a genius to see that if you hit your child to teach them right from wrong they will be likely to use violence in the future. Did you see the interview with this child where he stated the teacher said his father did the same to him? Hhmmm i see a trend!

A child that knows no consequence of action grows up to know no rules, boundaries or sense of wrong vs right. If a kid does something they aren't supposed to, punishment SHOULD ensue. They learn from this that wrong equals negatives. Negative reinforcement is not violence. Good parenting is teaching a child right from wrong, and a toddler understands simple qualifiers of such. A swat on the butt, taking away a beloved toy for a while...something that disrupts the pattern of wrong behavior teaches them there are results of their negative behavior. Patting little dingleberry on the head for doing something wrong only teaches them they can push boundaries further and further til they end up on death row wondering why the hell they are being persecuted when they 'dint do nuthin!'

Passive parenting breeds entitlement and apathy.

I was raised with spankings...even with a belt. Often with the dreaded wooden spoon. It taught me to understand that I couldn't just do whatever the fuck I wanted and not expect someone to bring the shit down on me sooner or later. I don't use violence. I don't have tolerance for it. I do, however, have three extremely well behaved, smart, loving children who have no problem knowing what is right and what is wrong. They don't have discipline problems, they don't act like assholes, and they are so because they were privy to a good swat on the ass when they acted up.

A kid touches a hot stove once. It hurts like hell. They avoid it in the future. Negative reinforcement works. Someone who has kids knows this. Someone who does not...needs to keep their fucking mouth shut and go pet their damn cat.

just as someone who doesnt know psychology should keep their mouth shut...(the burn from a hot stove and spanking a child are both examples of positive reinforcement because a stimulus that wasnt there before is being presented)

My point is that there is no evidence of physical violence from parents or other "authority figures" on the four individuals, I referenced.

Two are from wealth and two are from the middle-class.

All four are fucked up. Well, three . . . Dahmer is dead.

They must have had notes pinned to their shirts when they were young, too.

Yeah . . . that must be it.

I was worried music, art, media or video games might get another black-eye.

Or lazy and retarded parents.

LMFAO! not a psychologist but i do think if someone is going to talk about how "great" negative punishment is they should know what it really is. I am finishing my last two classes towards a psych degree but by no means claim to be an expert on the subject.

To be clear and strictly psychologically speaking:

The pinning of the note, on the disruptive little bastard, is an example of positive punishment, with the note serving as the aversive stimulus.

Is this a fair statement?

And I'm sure, with your ability to read sarcasm, you will be a great school guidance counselor someday. Though I fail to understand how being 72 hours into a 5150 hold counts as education.

Again with the anti-Irish racism?, yoiu can't help yourself can you Adolf?

I think he is just pissed because I am more Scottish than he is, I was born there and once lived there you wannabe jock douchebag.

The fact you are in favour of assaulting children just enhances your reputation as the biggest prick at Mock.

Teaching a child that violence is ever a solution to a problem is simply the wrong thing to do.

Interesting that everyone in this thread that says they were beaten as a child is in favour of beating children as an adult.

Violence begets violence.

try reading what I posted, you would look so much better than just posting up all the ranting whiny shit.

I have nothing against Irishmen, it's just that most of them display certian traits, one of them is knee jerk reactions with little understanding of the context.

Pretty much fits you as far as I can tell.

Mr "I have made up my mind before I have read the question" accusing my reactions of being kneejerk?

hah

The Scots are among the most kneejerk and aggressive people on the planet, if you were actually Scottish as oppossed to being an immigrant wannabe you would know that.

Now why don't you go and shoot a Muslim or slap a toddler?

Do you see the irony in what you just posted?

You label me as the aggressive type and portray yourself as the passive.

I'm advocating Discipline, there is a huge difference between that and beating kids.

Everything used to be set up on a system of actions -V- responsibility.

it was and is a good system, citizenship used to be an important catagory of education.

a system with no controls is a system in decline eventually the degradation of society will become intolerable

I have seen it first hand, the 13 year old with gang tats and a switchblade is treated by the system the same as a 13 year old who steals a candy bar from the corner store.

maybe that works for you, but it really does not work for the rest of society.

One will learn from the experiance, the other will gain creds and a feeling of pride from it.

These kids may have never gotten to that point if a little back of the seat justice had been delivered at the appropriate moment.

actions -V- responsibility has died and the kids pay the price for it.

It would horrify me to let my parents down, to embarrass them.

I know that sounds incredibly dorky. Smiley_emoticons_slash
