ANYONE at ANYTIME could end up on the streets through no fault of their own.
People that look down their noses or treat homeless people like the shit on their shoe sicken me. Some young people become homeless to avoid sexual or physical abuse at home.
In the UK homeless people are given a magazine to sell on the streets by the government called the Big Issue, purchasers can pay whatever they like for a copy, I ALWAYS buy a copy at least once a month, the fucking least I can do.

We have a few different types of homeless people here. The mentally ill who would rather live on the streets than in a group home having medication forced down their throats, the ones who just dropped out of society for whatever reason and choose to live that way, and the alcoholics and drug addicts that work odd jobs or at the labor hall, or panhandle and flop where they can. I never turn them down if they ask for money, it's not like they're living in the lap of luxury and I really don't give a damn if they spend my change on a hot dog or a beer.
Other than the mentally ill, I very rarely see a disabled homeless person around here though. The worst one I ever saw was in Budapest. He was sitting in the dirt in front of an abandoned convenience store with no shirt on, no leg, and his skin was covered in some kind of rash. I don't know how the fuck he got there or how long he'd been there, but it looked to me like he was hoping someone would come along and shoot him in the head to put him out of his misery.

one demographic of homeless bothers me the most...teens who have been thrown out of home or ran away due to abuse. they end up victimized by sex traffickers, and usually hooked on crack or some other dope. it breaks my heart because many of them might have had a life and education in the right circumstances.

We have a lot of homeless here in S Florida. Some are just bugshit crazy, cracked out drunks. Some are tards of one stripe or another, some are just lazy fucks that find it preferable to stand on a corner with a sign. Sometimes I will give them a buck, depends on the look, yes I know thats completely subjective, but it IS a buck I worked for. Lots of them stay here in spite of what it costs to live here, presumably because of the weather. I have talked to several of them, bought a few meals, handed out blankets in the winter and even worked in the turkey day kitchens a couple of times. From that I can tell you that there are some in fact that prefer the street. I agree with LC, some of the truely sad ones are the kids, its sickening to be propositioned by a 14 year old in an alley, makes me seriously want to harm whoever is responsible for them beng out there and doing what they are doing.

There's quite a difference between being homeless through a few bad breaks, and just being a fucking bum. It's very hard to tell the difference, so I don't give any of'em a fucking dime. I can't stand the fuckers that stand at the entrances/exits of every major store with a sign. If I were the manager/owner of these stores, I'd do everything in my power to make it impossible for them to do so (even though what they are doing is legal). Somehow (legally) I would make it extremely uncomfortable for these asshats to stand by my entrance.
As most of you know, my wife is a waitress. One of her customers used to come in and pretty much flat out brag on how much he earned by just holding up a sign...he had no desire to go out and get a real job. The old adage "Don't feed the bears" defo comes into play.
Just recently, while driving by our local Costco..I noted a younger gal with a sign, standing by the entrance/exit. Her hair was professionally dyed in some weird red-pinkish color..and she was yapping on her cell phone..to make me really irritated, she had her young daughter with her (I'm guessing the temp was in the mid to high 30's at the time) trying to play the sympathy card...pissed me right the fuck off.
Don't give these fuckers 1 penny folks...if you want to help out, donate your cash to a homeless shelter, where you know the money will be going to help those in need.

My husband recently recognized a couple of panhandlers from decades ago in gradeschool. He assumed they were homeless or addicts of some sort. While waiting for me to finish at the doctors, he decided to approach them..they were at gas stations off the expressway. Both had blue collar jobs, but in their spare time they dressed the part and begged. They both claim to bring in a few hundred dollars a day! They move from one populated spot to the next. I was floored! I now have a difficult time giving anyone a buck.

There's a great deal of money to be made from begging & where it is done makes all the difference. There was an old guy that I'd take to eat {Cowboy was horrified & insisted I stop that} & later would drop burgers off to but I would see the beggars finish for the day & drive off in vehicles nicer than mine. Hmmph.

OP, 2 or 300 dollars a day is not uncommon for a person in the right place with their hand out.
Tax free dollars and public assistance to boot.
