California fucks up....again!
#1
I finally took a position on the PTA board for next year. Went to the first meeting tonight and learned about this piece of shit ruling. Basically, up until this year, the school required kids to read two books over the summer and provide a book report at the beginning of the next year. Can't do that now unless the district can provide the books to all students; consequently the program is canceled.

Locks for lockers? Gotta provide them.

Specific P.E. uniforms-still under discussion (certainly we can't require the students to buy a school uniform but we MIGHT be able to require basics like shorts, a tee-shirt and gym shoes).

Band? They're actually saying the schools might have to provide instruments or not offer band.

Special materials/books for AP courses? Nope. Projects etc. that kids can't complete without spending some money, nope. I can see it now...4th grade "build a California Mission" but the school has to provide you with the Goddamn sugar cubes.

Moving isn't really an option but private school is beginning to look very attractive.

Jesus Christ. Typically 8th graders are offered an opportunity to travel to Washington D.C. but I'm sorry, it's not entirely free. I guess that will go out the window too.

I'm fucking pissed.

I remember doing that. I can still see the pink and white boxes of sugar cubes. I shop for groceries at least once a week, but I haven't seen a box of sugar cubes since I was 10. I bet they are there, I just don't see them.

Yeah, education has sucked since they let the parents run the show. Not all parents are cool. Some are assholes like their kids.

My county already cut sports at every level except high school. If the ACLU presses the issue here, we wouldn't be able to have a sports program at all because of the uniform fees. I raised a cheerleader and an athlete. It was over a thousand a year for uniforms/camp for the cheerleading and five hundred for each sports season. Kids in my district also supply their own band instruments (except for tubas and drums). The ACLU would kill band, too. And school clubs like the environmental club and chorus.

Fucking liberals and the people who want free stuff. (May be one and the same, not sure.)

Having all of this go through the courts, no one was even given the opportunity to vote on this crap.

Still, go Republicans! On a state level, I'm voting strictly Republican for the foreseeable future. California has gone crazy left wing.

Cool 30 years worth of liberalism and you finally figured it out, personally I think it's bullshit and you will go back on this pledge when it's time to vote, but for those who are gullible, stupid or otherwise politically challenged you sounded great.

Our district makes the kids provide their own instruments for bad. For sports the cheerleaders buy their own uniforms. Football players buy their jerseys. The school provides the pads and helmets. My youngest plays junior football and they provide everything except cleats. But it costs $135 to play. We pay some seriously high school taxes here and then have a gigantic list of school supplies to buy every year plus an activity fee. Then they ask for money for each field trip too. It's ridiculous.

DOE, when I was in school the schools were still funded locally, what I mean is that history was still taught in school, sports were played as part of the school curriculum, and we always had to buy our own cleats.

Go Cavemen!

The only thing we need to buy my daughter is her uniform, day trips out and her nutritionally balanaced Jamie fucking Oliver lunches.

She went to a farmers market near the Scottish borders the other week, there was a petting zoo within spitting distance of the farmers selling locally produced meat. She will now not touch beef or pork or lamb with a ten foot pole.

My daughter was briefly vegetarian although she made an exception for Happy Meals.

Thankfully, it didn't last long.

They still are funded locally. States/communities pay for their own schools. (Feds kick in about 10%) If you don't follow Federal rules, they will take away their 10%. (and the lunch program, I think, they control the food) States should tell kids to pack a lunch and tell the Feds to take their NCLB and fuck off.
