On Thursday, a group of Buddhists traveled to Gloucester and purchased 534 lobsters, about 600 pounds worth, from a wholesaler and dumped them back into the sea in a prayer ceremony in which the crustaceans’ bands were cut and blessed water was sprayed on them.

Freedom. But it may have been short-lived.

Yesterday, lobstermen from the fishing vessel Degelyse said they had traveled to the site of the ceremony, laid their traps, and hauled up exactly 534 lobsters, according to a local blog, Goodmorninggloucester.org.

And then they brought their haul right back to market.

“It’s really not meant as a slight toward Buddhism at all,’’ said Joe Ciaramitaro, who runs the blog that broke the story and co-owns Captain Joe and Sons Dock, where the boat and several others offload their catch. He also runs Captain Joe and Sons Wholesale Lobster Co. in Gloucester. “We’re just having fun.’’

I don't like the idea of something living having to die so I can eat it. That really bothers me.

It beats the alternative of you dying so something else can eat.

Save the lobsters; eat a Buddist.

Over here they either stick the knife in before they are cooked or they start them off in warm water which sends them to sleep then slowly raise the temperature until they are cooked.

I like lobster, scampi and king prawns.

"Rocky", the 27-pound Maine lobster

BOOTHBAY HARBOR — A giant 27-pound lobster has been caught off the Maine coast, but it won't be going into a pot of boiling water.
shrimp fisherman Robert Malone caught the monster crustacean in his nets Friday. He gave it to the Department of Marine Resources to deliver to the aquarium it operates in Boothbay Harbor.

The beast weighs 27 pounds and measures nearly 40 inches long. It was dubbed Rocky because it was caught in the Rockland area.

The lobster is the biggest ever brought to the aquarium and huge compared to 1- to 2-pound lobsters people typically eat. The biggest lobster on record was caught off Nova Scotia and weighed more than 40 pounds.

Hayden-Rodriquez says Rocky will soon be released into the ocean because he'll fare better in the wild.

I have relatives in Maine who claim to be able to hypnotize lobsters. I've never seen it; don't ask me wtf they're talking about.

You're an asshole. It's already bad enough that you want to eat him, you don't have to degrade him first.

even worse, red lobster used to pay slave wages for free-divers in south america and perhaps elsewhere to catch their lobsters. those divers often suffered the bends and serious injury with no recompense.

i don't think red lobster does that shit anymore, busted like some sweat shops, but i wouldn't spend a penny there.
i am lucky to get plenty of live local lobsters here.
