Wednesday afternoon, at Brunn's family home on Sleepy Hollow Road in Dahlonega, a man who identified himself as one of Brunn's brothers came outside with a pit bull on a short leash.

"All I know, he ain't did what people done say he did," the man said as he ordered news media to leave the yard.

I noticed on the video clips of his arrest that there were several armed officers escorting him to the squad car. It looked like there was concern that someone would try to possibly take him out? Or was there just the need to have that many officers at the time of arrest?

Murder suspect Ryan Brunn made his first court appearance Thursday in Cherokee County Superior Court in connection with the slaying of 7-year-old Jorelys Rivera of Canton.

Wearing an orange jail suit and a bulletproof vest, Brunn was led into the courtroom in downtown Canton and sat beside two court-appointed public defenders.

The 20-year-old suspect showed little emotion as charges were read against him.

Jorelys Rivera murder suspect Ryan Brunn remains in isolation in the Cherokee County jail after his attorneys did not ask for bond during his first court appearance today.

Court-appointed lawyers Daren Burns and David Cannon told Superior Court Judge Frank Mills they did not have enough time to review the case and prepare a bond motion after getting Brunn as a client at 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Brunn, 20, was arrested earlier that day in the brutal killing of Jorelys, a 7-year-old Canton Elementary first-grader who disappeared from the River Ridge at Canton apartment complex Friday.

Her body was found in a Dumpster at the complex Monday. She had been sexually assaulted, stabbed and beaten.

Brunn moved into River Ridge on Nov. 5 and worked as a maintenance man there.

He shuffled into Mills’ courtroom about 1:30 p.m. today wearing an orange jumpsuit and a white vest.

He sat at the defense table with his two attorneys. At least once Brunn turned and appeared to be looking for someone in the audience, which was packed with media members.

About a dozen law enforcement officers, some dressed in fatigues, manned the courtroom.

Brunn was read his rights and the charges against him and answered all questions with “yes, sir” during the 15-minute hearing.

He is being held on charges of murder and making false statements.

Burns said his client, who dropped out of high school in Dahlonega in the 10^th grader, was very shaken by the whole situation.

It’s not clear when he next will appear in court. His attorneys will have to file a motion to get Brunn a bond hearing.

The county grand jury is convening Monday, Mills said, but it’s more likely that prosecutors won’t be ready to present the case until the grand jury’s January session.

Meanwhile, Brunn is being held in isolation from the rest of the jail population, Cherokee County sheriff’s Lt. Jay Baker said.

Well in this heartbreaking story it is literally. But figuratively speaking, it also applies. I don't know the statistics, but I say that more than 50% of these kinds of child rapes and murders could have been avoided if the child was watched over. They are crimes of opportunity. We got to watch over our children, and other people's children.

Hundreds of people gathered in Canton Friday night to show support for the family of a 7-year-old sexually assaulted and murdered in her apartment complex.

After gathering in a local park for a candlelight vigil, the large group walked through downtown Canton to the funeral home where the family of Jorelys Rivera had gathered for a visitation. Funeral services for Rivera were set for First Baptist Church at 2 p.m. Saturday.The family greeted the crowd outside but then the victim's mother broke down crying, repeating in Spanish "Why? Why? My angel."
