I wasn't at all surprised to learn that so many joining ISIS are young, poor and uneducated. They must get an immense sense of power being able to take from those who have earned all they have, they are typical bullies, they use fear and intimidation.

I think it must be like when gangs recruit their new members; they try to make you feel wanted, and give you a warm, fuzzy feeling. After dropping out of school and being kicked out of the house, someone is paying attention to you, sticking a rifle in your hand and giving you money and thus, a feel of power for the first time in their drab, dreary lives. Probably a bunch of sociopaths and psychopaths who find each other. They learn to love the smell of blood, torture, and killing....Wow, someone is finally noticing me and aren't we all having loads of fun....in out trucks/SUV's, turbans, black robes (can change to camo at times depending on mood), masks, facial hair, we really look menacing, we will teach everyone to fear us...Religion, what religion? We kill for any reason.....

I hear ya and I can understand pushing for immigration reform and rallying against the Islamization of Germany (or wherever) -- completely agree that immigrants should not expect the laws in their new land to be changed for them, nor should they expect citizens to conform to best suit expectations they've carried from their home lands.

There needs to be a better balance in the US (and Germany, it seems) between welcoming diversity and encouraging/rewarding anti-assimilation, in my opinion. I really like having people of various cultural backgrounds and ethnicities living all around me and wouldn't want to see that thwarted. But I don't support handing immigrants a free business just for showing up, or establishing Sharia courts here or anything like that.

But, here's an on-topic bit for ya, blueberry. It surprised me. Jordan has just deployed thousands of ground troops to the Iraqi border in its latest move to counter the advance of the Islamic State group. They're moving and ramping up quickly, taking action in both Syria (by air) and now Iraq.

Coalition firepower would support the Iraq-led offensive, he added.

Anyway, now here is something that left me feeling kinda quirky this morning. First time in my life this actually happened.

Last night we had a small get together for a birthday party with our dear friends, when suddenly all phones went nuts. The US Embassy here in Sana'a is gone. And not like the Brits or others who are following suite to show some solidarity I guess, and said they will close temporarily, so they still have some guards and basic staff in their Embassies, but they actually all left last night.

Now what that means is this. They had about 150 American Staff there, it is a huge compound, and they had a large project in that compound going on where they build apartment blocks. My best guess is that it cost them about 40 million US$. The current structures are massive. When they took over the Sheraton they pumped in a good 20 million US$ to renovate it. All of that is utterly empty right now and the furniture and everything else that can be moved is being distributed as I am typing by the wonderful Hooters. 25 cars that came back from the airport have all been taken.

Overnight that large area that was occupied by the US here is a ghost town. To me, knowing it so well, it is simply unreal.

One thing for sure, they are gone for good!

Now this could mean 2 things. They are gone and I am extremely curious of what's gonna happen next, or, they will be back, as they usually do, but this time just different.

Well, I have only Yemen's motto in my head. We'll see!

US President Obama has submitted a Joint Resolution for Authorization for the Use of Military Force (AUMF) against the Islamic State group to Congress.

He's already, of course, personally authorized US airstrikes and military consultation in Iraq and Syria, but believes it would be beneficial for the Congress to officially sign off on US engagement moving forward.

The Joint Resolution calls for 3 year authorization to provide defensive support to fight IS(IL/IS) and does not specify geographical limits on where such engagement may occur.

I remember when we first invaded Iraq and Americans were so pissed that our soldiers were being killed by snipers, roadside bombs and assorted other means, I could hardly believe the audacity of their outrage. We invaded them! I'm not sure what so many expected but it was war after all and I would hope that if my country were invaded the people would fight the invaders too.

To treat it, we have to cut off a few bits, nuke a few other bits and sometimes introduce a bit of poison into the whole body to rid it of a greater evil. At the risk of appearing uber-specific , I don't think it was ever about America alone.

War and terror have always existed and I agree with you that environment is a big part of what most children become. There's plenty of fucked-uppery in every country, every ideology, every religion... Effin' humans.

Anyway, you posted something in another thread a while back that I thought hit the nail on the head -- something to the effect that hopelessness was the largest single contributor to amassing recruits to violent organizations.

It's easier for me to understand terrorists attracting hopeless poverty-stricken individuals via religious extremism in their own backyards than it is for me to understand how IS has managed to attract and convert so many brutal Australians, Brits, and other western volunteers. I tend to think mental and emotional illness figures heavily into that phenomenon.
