there is a book called "Pillars of the Earth" about a man who was a stone carver and helped build an ancient medieval cathedral. they took many years of labor and art. flying buttresses for example, had to be planned scientifically to bear the weight. it's a fascinating book.
it was a pretty good TV series also.
google the interiors sometime! wow
I think my boss has that book, it looks familiar, I'm going to look next time I'm there.
this is a DEAD pope!
notice how the stupid assholes at daily mail spell 'throne'.
Christians have gathered to pay their final respects to Pope Shenouda III as he sat on his thrown for the last time.
The church leader spent four decades in Egypt's Orthodox Church trying to soothe sectarian tensions between Christians and the majority Muslim nation.
Creepy, creepy, creepy, dead people are fuckin' creepy. I'd like to be more respectful of who he was but he gives me the willies now.
i guess it could be argued it's no different than laying him out in an open casket for viewing.

It is no different, I feel the same way about that. I don't let the *ick* I feel show when I have to go to a viewing. I haven't been to one in quite a long time. The last time I forgot to turn my phone off & it began to play Big & Rich's "Save A Horse Ride A Cowboy". It was just awful.
cool.
TEL AVIV, Israel – Israeli archaeologists have unearthed a stash of rare ancient jewelry near the site of the biblical Armageddon in the north of the country.
Israel Finkelstein of Tel Aviv University, who co-directed the dig, said this week that the find offers a rare glimpse into ancient Canaanite high society. The 3,000-year-old jewelry was found inside a ceramic vessel, suggesting the owner hid them before fleeing, he said.
The university said in a statement that "The trove is among the most valuable ever found from the Biblical period." It said that one piece in particular, a gold earring decorated with molded ibexes, or wild goats, is "without parallel."
According to the New Testament, Megiddo will be the arena for the final apocalyptic battle between good and evil.
wow! That ring is freaking cool. This stuff is amazing.
This is a cool find, I find the history there si interesting. I have actually been there, stayed on a kibbutz not far from Megiddo, which is not far from the Jezreel Valley as well as some others around the northern part, also got to travel a few different places in Israel too, there is an amazing amount of history there.
he is just having a nanna nap.
the times they are a changing...
NEW ORLEANS – The Southern Baptist Convention has elected its first African-American leader.
The Rev. Fred Luter Jr. (pronounced Looter) was elected president of the nation's largest Protestant denomination on Tuesday at its annual meeting. He is the pastor at Franklin Avenue Baptist Church in New Orleans.
The historic move comes as the denomination tries to expand its appeal beyond its traditional white Southern base. Membership and baptisms have been generally declining in recent years.
The Nashville, Tennessee-based denomination was formed before the Civil War in a split with northern Baptists over slavery and had reputation over much of the last century for supporting segregation.
Bumped for those of you who want to debate the power of prayer.

Two arguments come to mind:
First, either God is omnipotent or he is not. If so, how can we change his minds via a prayer?
I can't image God thinking to himself, "Well, I wasn't going to allow the Chargers to win this Sunday but your prayer, Patrick, changed my mind".
Or, "I was going to take your father's life with cancer but now that you've provided a prayer circle via your church, I will spare his life."
As if our prayers can change God's mind and without our prayers he would handle things differently.
Secondly, and equally as sadly,
if prayer truly worked the only answers to your prayers are "YES" or "NO", or "MAYBE".
You could pray to a gallon of milk (google that for a better understanding) and receive exactly the same results.
There is no answer to prayer because there is no
personal God.
