Quote:If these people have been employed under certain conditions then they are entitled to keep them. I bet these government workers are hardly living the high life. You get a few perks in government jobs and thats part of what attracts people to want to work in the public sector.

I don't think its right that these jobs are going overseas to cheap labour. And those jobs going overseas have a ripple effect on your whole community and government jobs. Isnt Michael Moore's hometown a ghost town now because of all the working class jobs shutting down. That would also effect infrastructure and the public sector jobs because of services need per population.

Thank you so much for picking me up on "your". I am writing quickly because I am busy too. The point of this is to express your opinion not spell check.

I love the way you guys are ganging up on me in a typical right wing way. Like a pack of bullies.

"A few perks"...heh, that's funny. Yes they may get a "few", but they are quite valuable ones indeed. Me? I contribute 8% of my salary to my 401K in the hope that I can retire at a reasonable age. The company I work for used to match my contributions up to 5%, but have ceased doing so due to the ailing economy. Union public employees in the State of Wisc (which is why this discussion is taking place)? Almost nothing, the taxpayers take care of the pensions.

Source

Now, lets talk health insurance. Me? Over $800/month ($841 to be precise) out of my salary to insure my family (wife and 1 kid). For public union employees of Wisc to cover themselves and their families? $85/month, with the rest being picked up by the taxpayers.

Source

The main gripe the unions are having with the Gov of Wisc, is that he want's to eliminate their collective bargaining rights. So wahhhhh, they will have the same rights as those of us who work for non-union private employers. I, like a lot of public employees, have not received a salary raise in over 2 years. Instead my company has gone to a profit sharing program, whereas if the company makes money, I/we get a percentage of the profits on a quarterly basis. If my company loses money, or breaks even, obviously I get nadda. I have no say-so in these matters, it is what it is, and I'm grateful to have a job in which I can support my family. I'm entitled to nothing. If the volatile semiconductor market takes a shit, then folks in my plant get laid off, as the company I work for will not have the money to pay them. Much like state employees, we too, a couple of years ago were had furloughs forced upon us, so that the company could survive.

Finally, going back to pensions, the average age at which the state public employee retires at is age 58 (thank you, Joe Q. Taxpayer), while most of the rest of us hope we can retire around 65 or so, albeit, that # seems to be rising over the last decade.

Fuck the unions. They are no longer needed. This isnt the early 1900's where employers can get away with abusing their employees. They drive up the prices of American goods making it hard to compete in the global market. They make it very difficult to fire incompetent employees....and the money that union workers are forced to contribute to the unions could be better spent on their own retirement savings.

Kid, are you really surprised that most people are ignorant about the unions and what has happened in this country, going from a world producer/supplier to a world buyer/consumer nation.

The public unions are the ones that need to pay more into their medical and retirement plans. Those plans are paid for by the taxpayers. private unions do not depend on taxpayer money...........that is the issue.
Another issue is when the government REQUIRES that private unions ONLY bid on government projects. Driving the cost up and still dependent on taxpayer money the project sometimes gets relocated to another district if the non-union private sector raises hell about it.
Legal extortion and legal financial strong arm tactics. Lets put all this to vote and see what happens. Smiley_emoticons_fies

Not surprised really, as a lot of folks are just too damned lazy to educate themselves.

Always amuses to hear yanks complaining about unions when you consider that they work the longest hours for the least pay and the least amount of benefits and paid holidays than anywhere in Europe.

The corporate fatcats have sold you the capitalist American dream and average Joe six pack has swallowed it hook, line and sinker, everyday the fatcats spank you on the ass and you say "thank you sir can I have another?"

Lets see how you feel about the "pursuit of happiness" when your job is shipped out to Mister Wing see kwok in Beijing who does your job faster and better than you for ten bucks a day and all the white rice he can eat.

Agreed, the whole issue at hand right now is the public union thing, and states that are flat out of funds.

However that doesnt change my opinion that all unions contribute to higher costs of goods for the American public, and also put us at a big disadvantage in the global economy.

Raising taxes to fund public sector workers does not work. It has been going on for 20 years and raising taxes cannot keep up with the spending towards entitlement programs. Just look at Europe if you want to see a failed system. They pay over 50% of their hard earned money towards a failed system, and there is no end in sight. Looking at the underlying cause of over-spending is a start and public union entitlement programs is a beginning. Let them pay for their own medical and pension plans. Or at least allow for new members to begin doing it.
It is a voting block and that is all it is.

I do. Several.

In a 'Right to Work' state, too.

32% tax bracket - my contribution to the right and left Federal spenders.

Bombs, bribes, energy or entitlements. No matter - I pay.

Now where did I put Mr. Wing Sum Dung's number?

aussie won't understand the "right to work state" or the 32% tax bracket.

I agree! USA don't have a public health system so they dont have the choice of private health insurance and so they are charged top dollar and getting ripped off. They cant go public. I did a diploma in small business management years and years ago and what I learnt from that is that the rich don't pay tax. Ordinary Joe's don't seem to understand that.

I mean this kind of mentality feeds social problems such as crime and antisocial behaviour because you create a "have" and "have nots" and the "have nots" are socially excluded and devalued. The homelessness that the US has, is a disgrace in a westernised society.

I wonder what the Canadians think of all this?

Of course they are socially excluded & devalued, they are losers. Chances are if one is in that category they are a lazy, uneducated, worthless fuck. The "haves" of this world are driven, they are ambitious, they want more for themselves & their families and they are willing to work for it.

I begrudge every penny of MY money that goes to support those people & their bastard offspring.

Ummmm we have private health insurance, what we don't want is nationalised health insurance, and a 50% or higher tax to pay for it.

you know some how, 6.00 a gal gasoline just does not sound good to me, how much is your petrol in aussie land again? how much a liter?

Corporations! Thank God!

I thought you were talking about old, white, rich conservative men.

And securities traders.
